mikehapp Posted December 27, 2010 #26 Posted December 27, 2010 How do you take the tips off to refinish them?
Little Bob Posted December 27, 2010 #27 Posted December 27, 2010 Mike. If there are rivited on just drill them out. They may or maynot come off. You may have to pull them and the baffle may come with it. Just finsh drilling out the rivits and give them a twist . You should be able to get them off. Then drill and tap the baffle holes to a quarter 20.
Condor Posted December 27, 2010 #28 Posted December 27, 2010 How do you take the tips off to refinish them? I found that even tho the rivets were drilled out to the right size I still had to knock them out with a drift punch. Then it took a little persuading to git the tips to start to slide out. I took a good sized pocket knife and inserted it in the crack between the body and the tip and worked it around. Once the gap widened a bit I took a flat head screw driver and twisted it in the gap to coax the tip out a little further. Then it was a matter of rocking the tip back and forth while pulling on it. If the Bub's have been on for a few years they build up corrosion between the body and the lip. It takes a bit to get them seperated. While you have the tips off you might as well rebuild them. I bet there's nothing left to the packing. On mine I used Ceramic packing. From what's been reported it doesn't breat down a easy. I'll know personally once it stops raining and I get them installed.
Little Bob Posted December 28, 2010 #29 Posted December 28, 2010 Condor, Where did you get that packing? How much does it cost? Been riding since you repacked them? Sound?
Condor Posted December 28, 2010 #30 Posted December 28, 2010 Condor, Where did you get that packing? How much does it cost? Been riding since you repacked them? Sound? OFF Ebay My packing cost $19.00 bucks... looks like it may have gone up a bit.. Your gonna need 2 pieces 17"x8". It's easy to cut to size. And I actually trimed the thickness down from 1" to about 3/4" which is also easy. Just pic at a corner about a quarter inch down and it'll peal off that layer. I also bought some stainless mesh/screen from McMasters-Carr. I bought 8x8 mesh which ended up being a little too stiff to work easily. Next time I'll get something a little flimsier. I bought a piece 24x12 and cut to what I needed. Ran around 30 bucks. Nope haven't riden with them yet... It's wet outside. Stay tuned. I'm going to do a before and after video.
