hipshot Posted November 17, 2010 #1 Posted November 17, 2010 after reading about "BONGO-BOB'S "misfortune, it became obvious to me that some members here are "savvy" about peripheral neuropathy. my sister has it in both feet, and now her hands are showing signs of "loss of feeling". she is NOT diabetic, and is rapidly becoming a cripple. anyone who knows about this malady, please respond or p.m. me with your input. God bless all. just jt
mini-muffin Posted November 17, 2010 #2 Posted November 17, 2010 I sent you a PM with this site but thought some here might benefit from this info. My dad has neuropathy actually two types. One was due to the diabetes, but you don't have to be diabetic to have it. http://www.neuropathy.org/site/PageServer?pagename=homepage Margaret
Beau-Kat Posted November 17, 2010 #3 Posted November 17, 2010 Thanks for the link. I had spinal fusion surgery in 2007. The surgery was a great success and I have no more low back pain at all. Months afterwards, I was having some leg pain and foot sensitivity issues. The spine doctor said possibily my nerves were acting up after being compressed for many years. In 2008, after the bones had mended and the fusion was substantial, I had the metal hardware removed to maybe relieve some possible nerve compression, but that didn't really help. I went to a neurologist and had a nerve conduction test done. He said that the results indicated peripheral neuropathy in both legs. I asked about the seriousness of this. He said that if I were 80, he wouldn't worry so much. But I was 49 at the time and that concerned him. He said that I would eventually have difficulty walking and would most likely need increasing levels of assistance. Anyway, over the past three years, my leg pain and foot sensitivity have improved a bit. So, I don't know what to expect down the road. It is however, something that I think about often. Rusty
GAWildKat Posted November 17, 2010 #4 Posted November 17, 2010 I don't know alot about neuropathy so I will not try to act the expert in that. I will relate my experience with cymbalta. The diabetics here can vouch that it is used to treat neuropathy. It's also an antidepressant. I took it off and on for several years for clinical depression. I complained both to my shrink and family doc that I was having this wierd pins and needles feeling from my waist down after starting the med. Neither of them knew what it could be and said it may go away in time. Over time my dosage was increased and it got a bit worse. I was with a friend who was spending father's day weekend with her family. Her uncle is a neurologist in the Clarksville TN area and was visiting as well. He saw me walking around and mentioned my disability then started asking what meds I was taking currently. Mentioned the cymbalta and he was very upset. Told me that it was causing my neuropathy like issues and was affecting my liver, I was a bit jaundiced. I stopped it immediately on his advice and returned to my family doc for a change of meds. Since then the 2 side effects have been made public through advertising....so moral to the story, also check the meds too.
