22lyons Posted November 13, 2010 #1 Posted November 13, 2010 pulled the rear end and lubed everything from hub to drive shaft with moly paste. also got a new rear tire and replaced brake pads. I have put several hundred miles on since the work. Last night the wife and i were arriving at home when i noticed a "creak" somewhere in the rear end. It goes with the rotation of tire or shaft. Any thoughts? Did I miss something? Thanks for the help.
Guest Posted November 13, 2010 #2 Posted November 13, 2010 Could be anything but when you put the final drive unit back on did you just fit it in place or did you line it up with the axle first? Proper way to install the final drive is to loosly snug up the 4 bolts then place the axle in it to line it up properly then torque the bolts to spec, remove the axle and you should be set. Doint it without lining it up with the axle in place could cause it to be slightly off, which could result in a "noise" or a slight vibration. If thats the case the fix is easy. Just raise the bike and slightly loosen the 4 bolts. Not a lot, just slightly. Then, taking a rubber mallet, gently tap the bolt area with it and the final drive should line up. Go back and tighten the bolts and you should be good to go. Also, did you remove the center hub itself, the one with the circlip and remove the hub, sand off the rust from the "fingers", add some moly and re-assemble? Dont ask me how I know this......

Thanks for the thought. I did keep the 4 bolts loose when i put the shaft back in; HOWEVER, I did NOT take the hub apart! I wonder if that could be it. I used a bunch of break cleaner which could have gotten in there and took some grease out. I also realized after that I could have removed the shaft from the hub...i guess it is just compression fit?
krispy Posted November 13, 2010 #4 Posted November 13, 2010 My guess would be the fingers in that hub as well. I had the "creak" show up one time at slow speed when coasting to a stop. Wasn't a sound that made you feel good. Headed for home, did some checking in on VR.org, and went to work to clean it up. Problem solved. If you hear this at slow speed, even rolling it around the garage or driveway, that's probably it. As Ruffy said, there is a circlip (snap ring) that needs to be removed, then the pins will come out of the hub dampeners. Good luck!
V7Goose Posted November 13, 2010 #5 Posted November 13, 2010 If you did not pull the clutch hub out of the wheel and grease the drive fingers, that is your problem. Guaranteed. Goose
22lyons Posted November 14, 2010 Author #6 Posted November 14, 2010 i followed the steps for rear wheel removal...did i miss it? http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=515
bikenut Posted November 14, 2010 #7 Posted November 14, 2010 You did everything right except what you followed does not show how to grease and clean the fingers in the rear wheel. On the wheel you will have to remove a big snap ring on the gear side and then remove the fingers out of the wheel. clean and grease and put back together and noise will be gone. steps to do this are in the tech section. Hope this helps
22lyons Posted November 14, 2010 Author #8 Posted November 14, 2010 what about the shaft going back into the hub? I think i remember reading after the fact that it is pressure fitted into the hub...is it worth pulling it apart for greasing that too?
