Panjandrum Posted November 9, 2010 #1 Posted November 9, 2010 I am looking to replace my HJC and Scorpio open faced helmets, but I am having difficulty finding helmets that can be fitted with the Yamaha standard open-faced head-set and mike. I have a Scorpio half-helmet, and used Velcro to secure the mike. It works OK, but is not ideal. The HJC is getting old (6 years), and works well, but the new ones I have found in the dealers will not readily accept the mike. Anybody using a recent open face helmet with the audio gear that they are really happy with?
Jus Monkeyin Around Posted November 9, 2010 #2 Posted November 9, 2010 I got mine at j & m corp its a KBC i like its a tour com ready for a headset.
etcswjoe Posted November 9, 2010 #3 Posted November 9, 2010 The wife and I have Gmax they come with speaker pockets and work great with a standard headset, only drawback is they are only DOT certified.
Bobby G Posted November 9, 2010 #4 Posted November 9, 2010 This is what I've found to be the best ones available for half helmets, and is what I use. I tried the cheaper over-the-ears headphone type, and they hurt after about 20 minutes. http://wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/3145_Slide_In_Shorty_Half_Helmet_J_M_Helmet_Headset

Cheaper, but more painful! http://wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/26740_IMC_Gold_Wing_Helmetless_OR_Half_Helmet
mini-muffin Posted November 10, 2010 #6 Posted November 10, 2010 http://www.sierra-mc.com/ You can also get the J&M stuff at Sierra. I won't use wingstuff anymore had a bad experience with them. Margaret
Freebird Posted November 10, 2010 #7 Posted November 10, 2010 I agree....GREAT people at Sierra. I've used and recommended them for years.
elmicko Posted November 10, 2010 #8 Posted November 10, 2010 Check out Vega helmets. They come with speaker pouches and are easy to wire for a headset. I have 6 of them and really like them.
rentalguy1 Posted November 10, 2010 #9 Posted November 10, 2010 I just bought a pair of HJC HC-31's that match the VR's paint almost exactly (white). The stock headsets mated up very easily. The only hard part was tucking the excess wire to the right side earpieces. I think I gave about $80/each.
RedRaptor22 Posted November 10, 2010 #10 Posted November 10, 2010 We have the street and steel b-24 helmets at cyclegear that come with a zip-off wind skirt that has built in speaker pockets for $59.99, they are made by bell.
saddlebum Posted November 10, 2010 #11 Posted November 10, 2010 Scala makes headsets that use very thin speakers just a little larger than a quarter. I use it on all of my helmets. the speaker has velcro on the back and simply sticks to the lining in the helmet. just choose a spot were you won't notice it.The pic below is my half helmet with one mounted in it. the sound is by the way is excelent.
Panjandrum Posted November 10, 2010 Author #12 Posted November 10, 2010 Thanks for the responses. I have the Yamaha head-set, and while not thrilled with them, I do not want to replace them. The issue I have is finding an open faced (not half) helmet that I can attach the microphone to.

Does Scala make a headset that will plug into the intercom jacks on a Venture? All I saw was bluetooth sets.
OldBear Posted November 10, 2010 #14 Posted November 10, 2010 You may want to check out the Nolen N-43 as well. These can be either 3/4 or, if you wish, full face (by adding the chin bar). We got ours from J&M with the headsets installed and are VERY pleased with them. Seems to me that they have more "peripheral vision" than most other helmets I've tried (though in all fairness, I'm used to full face types which have more restrictive vision than 3/4's typically do.) Anyway, the 43's are very light weight and quite comfortable. Good luck with whatever you go with!
vegastruckee Posted November 10, 2010 #15 Posted November 10, 2010 I just got a pair of HJC FS-3 helmets from newenough.com for about $150 total shipped to my door. I unsnapped and pulled the entire inside liner out. The styrofoam ear section was easily removed with one screw. I took a razor and cut out the stryrofoam to accomodate my speakers. Put everything back together and the helmet functions perfectly but the speakers are in there and NO EAR PAIN. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/vegastruckee/IMG_6951.jpg http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/vegastruckee/IMG_6952.jpg http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/vegastruckee/IMG_6953.jpg
Gary N. Posted November 11, 2010 #16 Posted November 11, 2010 We use Gmax and Fulmer 3/4 open face helmets and J&M headsets (same ones Yamaha sells). No problem mounting the headset to either of these. I really like the Fulmer and would buy another when the time comes.

Ben, I just picked up my half helmet boom. I noticed from your pix that you have the speaker directly on the half helmet. So using the supplied ear curtains is not really essential and the sound quality is still ok at riding speeds? I'm not to0 crazy about using the ear curtains
djh3 Posted May 24, 2012 #18 Posted May 24, 2012 +1 on the ear curtian thing. Part of the reason I wear my shorty is I want some air circulation around my neck etc. I have though about taking a pair of ear buds (like for MP3 player) and soldering them in instead of the speakers, then just mount the mic. As far as our other helmets go the wife and I both have Bell Mag 8. The J&M headsets mounted up in about 30 min in each of them and work fine. My half is a Scorpion EX100 I like that it has a stow away shield if it starts to rain.

cabreco Posted May 24, 2012 #20 Posted May 24, 2012 Oh yeah, I could plug in ear buds too if I don't like the sound. The plus point on the Scala is the speakers plug into the boom mic so no soldering involved.
