GoldVenturing Posted November 7, 2010 #1 Posted November 7, 2010 So there I as, driving to work on a beautiful SoCal afternoon. I came up on a 90 degree left handed sweeper, no traffic, clear road, about 25mph. I eased into the turn, acheiving full lean with throttle roll-on, when to my surprise, my back end completely washed out. I found my self on the pavement watching my '09 RSV continue in a straight line, on it's left side. When it hit the edge of the roadway, it high-sided and smashed down hard on the right side. Tow truck to the dealer, call to insurance and several beers late, here I am. By the grace of God I am uninjured, but the bike may be a total. New fairings, bags and rub rails, new windshield, new engine guards, new floorboards, that's just the start of what I see needed. And I am NO mechanic. .
friesman Posted November 7, 2010 #2 Posted November 7, 2010 Aw man, i am so sorry to hear of this. BUT I am real happy that youre ok and that is the good part. I am curious to know if you were in full gear and full face helmet or not? Brian
GoldVenturing Posted November 7, 2010 Author #3 Posted November 7, 2010 Full gear, yes, and I wear a 3/4 helmet. My commute home is 50 miles at the crack of dawn after 12.5hours, and I usually drink a cup of coffee on the bike to maintain my alertness. My gear worked flawlessly, though. Not so much as a scrape on me.
GoldVenturing Posted November 7, 2010 Author #4 Posted November 7, 2010 I just saw your location. I used to work for United Rentals, and I audited our branches in Regina and Saskatoon the week of 9-11-01. I've neer forgotten the kindness that was shown to an American in their midst. Great town.
Motorpig Posted November 7, 2010 #5 Posted November 7, 2010 Glad you're able to talk about it...The bike will get fixed...or replaced...Your safety is definetly a good trade off for some cracked plastic and mechanical work. Out of curioustity...where in SoCal..and which road if you dont mind me asking.
ThomWill Posted November 7, 2010 #6 Posted November 7, 2010 Wow, that is a bad story but one with a happy ending that you should be happy be able to tell, over and over. Hope the insurance company takes a hint from fate and is kind to you.
Grandpagak Posted November 7, 2010 #7 Posted November 7, 2010 look at the good side.. at least you are still with us to talk about it.. glad that you are ok:080402gudl_prv:
royalstarjac Posted November 7, 2010 #8 Posted November 7, 2010 Sorry about your bike. Any day you can walk away from a motorcycle wreck is a good day!
Freebird Posted November 7, 2010 #9 Posted November 7, 2010 From your description, it sure sounds like the bike may be totaled but at least your not and that's the only thing that is really important. We are very glad that you are hear to tell the story.
etcswjoe Posted November 7, 2010 #10 Posted November 7, 2010 Sorry about the bike, glade to hear you are ok,
Guest RawHide Posted November 7, 2010 #11 Posted November 7, 2010 (edited) Whether you keep the bike or replace it, it doesnt really matter, as long as you are still here will all of us and ALIVE, that is what really matters. Glad you were able to tell the story and good luck with your next bike.....or repairs! From Central NY between the Finger Lakes Region Joanna Edited November 7, 2010 by RawHide spelling
Condor Posted November 7, 2010 #12 Posted November 7, 2010 It could have been a lot worse Kevin. Thanksfully it wasn't... We don't need to lose any SoCal riders..
skydoc_17 Posted November 7, 2010 #13 Posted November 7, 2010 Hey Kevin, Both Jean and I are VERY Glad to hear that you are OK! We lived in Eastern San Diego for many years and although I never went down, I did scare myself more than once because of dusty roads in the So.Cal area. I hope that your Ins. Co. will be fair with you, and you will give riding another try. Really Glad you are OK! Earl and Jean
LilBeaver Posted November 7, 2010 #15 Posted November 7, 2010 glad you can talk about it. Sounds like you hit some gravel or something... Hopefully the rest of the process will be easy on you and you won't have any surprises come up in the next week or so.

Brian
Yammer Dan Posted November 7, 2010 #17 Posted November 7, 2010 Glad you are OK. The Gear works!! In my wreck a few years ago I had a lot of busted bones but NO Rash. They cut everything off me and ruined it ( Jacket, Gloves, Utility Belt, Boots and Uniform) but it did its job.
XV1100SE Posted November 8, 2010 #18 Posted November 8, 2010 Sorry to hear about your bike. Really glad you are unharmed. If the insurance company writes off your '09 you can upgrade to the '11. And you'll feel like you are still on the '09 !
OutlawRider Posted November 8, 2010 #19 Posted November 8, 2010 Sorry to hear about your bike. Bikes can be replaced, Glad your gear worked and you walked away. Hope you have a good outcome with the ins.
Evan Posted November 8, 2010 #20 Posted November 8, 2010 Kevin, I'm sure many of us think that we are at risk of going down like that. It's so good to hear about going down like you did - without injury. Hopefully, you will be back in a saddle again soon. Good luck with fixing or replacing.
Guest Ken8143 Posted November 8, 2010 #21 Posted November 8, 2010 Hey man - everytime I hear about someone going down I get this awful tightening you know where. So glad you are ok.
Zfrebird4 Posted November 9, 2010 #22 Posted November 9, 2010 Can you share with us what you think caused you to go down? May help the rest of us stay up a little better. Thanks. JackZ
davecb Posted November 9, 2010 #23 Posted November 9, 2010 Sorry to hear about your accident, Glad your OK..But.. If you are running stock tires,,,That is the cause...
GoldVenturing Posted November 9, 2010 Author #24 Posted November 9, 2010 Wow...I was away from the board for a day...can't believe all the responses! Thank you all for your kind thoughts. I will try to answer as many questions as I can remember! The crash happened at Wolcott Ave / Franklin Parkway in Castaic, in unincorporated northern LA county. The road makes a 90 degree turn to the north (as you are traveling WB). As I was leaned over, and beginning to accelerate out of the turn, I think my back tire (not stock, but a Dunlop Elite 3) hit some oil. I went back and checked, no sign of gravel or dirt. Just a poor surface appraisal on my part. Insurance company is Geico, they have been fair in the past, I just hope that they DON'T total the bike, I really liked it, it was set up just right...Has every accessory that Yamaha sells in the Star catalog. I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again for the kind words! This father of 4 young boys does NOT need to spending any time in a hospital recovering from stupidity...
