Call from dealer yesterday. Recall on my 07' Venture

Just wanted everyone to know that my dealer caled me, spoke to my wife, on Saturday and said that I needed to bring my bike in because there was a recall that was just announced on the 07's about the head bolts not being torqued properly and that a new head gasket would be installed. I just love owning the most expensive bike I've ever owned and the first Yamamha by the way AND now they have to take the heads off AND find a way to quiet this obnoxious sounding bike. The sound is bad enough where I really don't even like riding the thing. I'm going to wait until the Spring to have it fixed though because I don't want a new head gasket put on and then the bike sitting in a freezing garage. Anyways, I know these things can be fixed but I'm kind of sour on the Yamaha experience already. In four years, I'll sell this thing with a year left on the warranty and take my money over back to Suzuki or Honda. So anyways, guys with the "new" 07's, give your dealer a call. Take it easy gents.

I won't give up on it> I'm just pissed because of the money I spent and this being my first Yamaha. Out of the countless Hondas and Suzuki's I've owned, with the exception of an 87 Honda Hurricane, did I ever take a bike in for a recall, obnoxious sound or anything, not even service, did that myelf. Anyways, I'll let them tear apart my bike and pray that they put it together correctly and not scratch the hell out if. You know what's funny? My wife is the one who wanted me to buy the Venture and has told me she isn't going to let me get rid of it, so Yamaha BETTER make it right:)

Hi Policeman........Hey something to consider. Get the Vin number off your bike and check it with the dealers information. Recalls generally go across a certain spectrum of time. Also just because there is a recall on certain bikes for certain things......actually with something like head bolts not being tight, because of?......built on Friday and someone forgot to tighten some of them?

What I am saying is you may have a problem you may not.......just because you have a recall on something that is human error.......it may or may not exist on your bike. A defective component is another story.

Why do you not get a service manual.........and find out the torque specs and go buy a torque wrench and simply check the torque on the bolts yourself first. This is what I would do.......for a recall based on human error. No way I would tear it all down......that is a pain....a royal one!! If not leaking......if not broke.......do not fix.......tear it apart and yes things can go back wrong.......I would just check the head bolt torque to make sure it is correct and not worry about it......hey you still have a lot of warranty left......a small leak if it were to occur.....not a real worry...you can always go that route if you have to. I am still learning about this particular bike myself.......I do not know what the torque specs are myself yet.....but I bet you it is on this site somewhere already.......I would think the head torque would be the same for all motors of this design. I would just check the head torque.......then relax. Kit

 

Hey just checked.......on this site......2nd gen tech library....torque is 31 ft pounds.......everything you need is here...smile.....tis not hopeless....... better go read it yourself.......do not trust me....I cannot read. Kit

and then, next spring when you're riding, and the head comes loose and locks the motor up and you go down, you wont be able to recover any damages from Yamaha because you were informed about the recall. Most likely, your insurance wont cover it as well because you were informed about the recall and you chose to operate it despite Yamaha's warning.

 

Take the bike in next spring. Take plenty of pics. Become good friends with the service manager and the tech who will be working on your bike. Buy them some Pizza for lunch.

 

This recall is not near as bad as the recall on the 2nd gear circlip in the Roadstars and the Warriors a few years back. That covered 4 years of Roadstars and involved an entire tear down of the engine and splitting the cases.

 

BTW.... When you find the perfect bike with no recalls and absolutely no quirks, please come back and let us all know about it. I have yet to here about a bike without some form of a "problem" one way or another.

Uh, hello?

 

If there has been a recall on your bike, car, etc., and you don't get it to the dealer and have it looked after, you will be majorly S.O.L down the road if you have any problems.

The bikes come with a five year warranty-use it to your advantage!

I talked with a Yamaha tech rep when they were at Daytona for Biketoberfest. He acknolwedged that there is a service bulletin out on the 07 Ventures and Tour Deluxe stating that the head bolts on certain VIN numbers may not have been torqued properly. I specifically asked if there would be a RECALL, he said "no" because it was not a safety issue. Not saying that Yamaha has not changed their mind on a recall, but normally recalls are handled by a letter in the mail not a call from the service manager.

According to the tech rep at Biketoberfest the suspect bikes are identified in the service bulletin by their VIN and all you need to do is give your VIN number to the dealer and they can look it up and tell you if your bike is a suspect bike or not. Additionally according to the tech rep and folks on other forums that have had this issue , the problem will normally manifest itself as an oil leak. So I would suggest just getting your VIN number to the dealer and see what they say.

As far as the noise of the bike and not liking it, well I had a 98 Royal that I put 96000 trouble free miles on it before I bought my 07 Venture. Did the 98 make noise at certian RPMs? You bet, at 55 MPH in 4th it sounded like an F-15 taxing down the runway, did I run at that speed much? No just found a better speed or gear combination. Does my Venture make some noise? Yep, but with AMSOIL it is less than the 98 and after I had the dealer check the drive shaft alignment and the real rear wheel does it "seem" to be better, that could be my imgination, I have no quantitative data. You have a 5 year warrenty, use it, if the bike is unacceptable take it back and have the dealer do what ever it takes to make it as good as it can be. I know that can be tough sometimes. Will this bike ever be as quiet as many bikes on the road? No way, with the straight cut gears, this is a noisy bike, but in my humble opinion it is still one of the best bargins on the road and unless something else comes out that is a heck of a lot better I going to buy another when it comes time to rplace my 07.

I Agree with this, stop in often, throw a couple bucks there way and you will be surprised how your treated.

 

Personally I would never get upset at a recall, I think it is good, at least there taking care of you. They could wait and see if you ever have a problem or if you do you may not even bring it in, so they are going out of there way, for you.

 

Hope the dealer does not scratch the bike etc, but remember this is not Yamaha it is the dealer if he did.

 

On the first gen I believe some of the head bolts are under the camshaft, and they will have to pull the motor.

 

If I may suggest getting it done now or during winter, this way they will have the time to do it right instead of rushing in the spring. On the noisey bike maybe you have the dreaded noise, and maybe they would look at this for you now as well (remember he is not making much money during the winter months and if your bike is there maybe he will find things to charge Yamaha.)

 

Best of luck and do not give up yet, I hope your happy with your purchase.

I just had the Drive shaft replaced on my 2007, I had 11, 330. miles on it.

anda gasket on the lef side of the bike, I found oil on the kick stand.

Oh and that noice, I get it in 3rd gear, sounds like it going to blow..

 

The bike was in the shop for 16 days. all the parts relating to the drive shaft were replaced.

 

I rode it this morning , But I not sure how i feel about the NEW feeling of the ride:confused24:

I rode it this morning , But I not sure how i feel about the NEW feeling of the ride:confused24:

 

The noise I believe is related to RPM, also believe it is in more than one gear but is just more noticeable at that speed. You could switch the gear and see if it is quieter.

 

I just turn the volume up, actually mine is not that bad.

Actually Brad...I'm pretty sure all the head bolts are under the camshafts 1st and 2nd gen. To retorque you have to remove small plastic caps from the cam bearing caps....and with the camshaft rotated to the right spot...there is a hole through the camshaft journal to allow getting a special allen wrench on the headbolt. So retorquing is do-able with the cams installed in the bike. Lifting head to change head gasket when the engine is in the bike is something else.

Hi Ron........I agree.......tell him to take it to the shop....I have just spent an hour going over the breakdown of the engine......if one has no knowledge of this operation and specialized tools.......it would be difficult, I think I will check mine next time I adjust the valves...I will cut off an extension and weld it if I have to......but best left to the shop.

Why does everyone want to wait till spring? Hey the bikes shops are slow in the winter....not a lot to do........be a good time to get it in and get it taken care of......then that first sunny day when spring fever sets in.....off you can go!! Why would fixing it now hurt anything.......just asking......curious about that.

Hey I had the perfect bike.......not one single problem......not one. I put 67,000 miles on it. I still have a photo of it hanging on my wall. It was a Honda VTX 1100 Shadow. I changed oil and plugs.......put on new tires, did normal maintenace.......checked the valves one time......checked the carbs once I think. I am looking more and more at Honda again. I know the wing had some frame problems.......bet they took care of that .....more and more impressed with Honda.........I like Crickett.........but starting to look at her with an eye somewhat closed.........yep the jury is still open....I myself have a lot of warranty left......but I look at it like this......why should I have to be using it.......this also is my first Yamaha large street bike.....I did not have these issues with my Honda and Suzuki bikes.......I am still very carefully looking at this bike........thinking.......she is a pretty one.......but really do not want all these issues.......if it was ten years old and used and abused.......I would understand...............Kit

I've been noticing some black oil on my side stand though none is dripping on the garage floor. What gasket did they replace?-Jack

The dealer advised that they are not going to "just re-torque" the bolts, but will pull the head and put a new gasket in place. I also think this doesn't cover all 07's just a certain "run". Naturally, my bike is in that run. ANd why wait until spring??? It's supposed to snow here in OH on Tuesday and like I said before, I don't want to have a brand new head gasket put on and not have the chance to run the bike for some time and distance before putting it into a garage in freezing temps for it to sit for 4-5 months, then wheel the thing out to see that it's still leaking. I don't want them tearing into my "new" bike a second time.

My new 07 has an oil leak as well. We were all thinking that the dealership put too much oil in the crankcase. Now I'm wondering.......

 

It's in the shop as I write for the 600 mile service. Think I'll ask them about the service bulletin.

i know exactly how you feel.i had my rs warrior about one week and i get a recall letter telling me don't ride it at all .i could be fatally or seriously injured due to tranny lock up.i call the dealer and they have to pull the motor and split the cases.no way are some rumdums going to tear into my brand new bike.i ended up doing the recall myself.worked out great because while i had it apart i did a little internal modifying.what a major job it was.but i did it with perfection and when i got done i knew it was done right.there were all kinds of horror stories on the warrior sight about lots of problems after the so called dealer techs got done with them,such as oil leaks, never ran right again,etc.etc.. :depressed::2133:
