hillrider Posted October 13, 2010 #1 Posted October 13, 2010 I can find GL-3-4-5. I can find GL-5 (with hypoid additive). Can't find GL-4 (which is spec'd). I can find more conflicting information than I really want to read. Anybody got a clue as to whether GL-5 is safe to use in our pumpkins???
skydoc_17 Posted October 13, 2010 #2 Posted October 13, 2010 Hey Chuck, I run the BelRay "Gear Saver" 80W90 Hypoid Gear Oil. I have had excellent results with it. My 87"VR has the 2005 FJR1300 Final Drive in her and I run this bike like a "Scalded Cat" with no problems what so ever. I have used this product since the 80's and have never had a Final Drive fail on me with over 300,000 miles on VR's and more on other bikes. It is an excellent product. I am not connected with this company, just sayin' To answer your question, you are looking for the 80W90 Weight Hypoid Gear Oil. Earl
Steve S Posted October 14, 2010 #3 Posted October 14, 2010 If you can find a good quality 90W oil in the GL 3-4-5 listing, use it. That oil will take care of any type of gears you may encounter. The most important thing is good quality oil and regular maintanence...
hig4s Posted October 14, 2010 #4 Posted October 14, 2010 the manual says GL-4 is a quality rating and GL-5 or GL -6 oils are also OK.
jpbragwell1215 Posted October 14, 2010 #5 Posted October 14, 2010 :sun1:I use Valvoline synthetic blend 80W90 and never had any problems. Regular maintenance is the key. JIM B.
