cw1263 Posted October 12, 2010 #1 Posted October 12, 2010 I just bought a 06 rsv midnight, 5000 miles, runs good first and second after that not so good. Anybody close to central Iowa who wants to show how to sync carbs thanks for the help.
Dano Posted October 12, 2010 #2 Posted October 12, 2010 Pull your plugs and check them, you could be running on only 3 cylinders, especially if it won't go over 80-90 mph. How long has it been sitting? Run a couple of cans of Seafoam thru it over a couple of tanks of gas, that'll help clean the carbs out. Other thing to do is to start it up and immediately feel the exhaust pipes up where they exit the motor. A cold one will show you a dead cylinder. You should do this within the first 5 or 10 seconds, after that they'll get too hot to touch.

Seafoamed twice no good. had carbs off and cleaned they looked good. have not synced them yet. felt the pipes all getting hot now. cleaned the plug caps no good. it seems to run real good through 1st and 2nd after that popping and backfiring. idle seems fine as does revving it up while parked.
Dano Posted October 12, 2010 #4 Posted October 12, 2010 Make sure you're not running too low an RPM in the upper gears, these motors don't like it too much with heavy throttle and high load below 3500. Good luck on the help for the synch, if'n I was closer I'd help you out. Order the Morgan Carbtune, the instructions are pretty easy to follow, but you'll need a REALLY long screwdriver to do the synch.

skydoc_17 Posted October 12, 2010 #7 Posted October 12, 2010 Hey Chris, Welcome to the VR.ORG site! As you mentioned, a Carb. Sync. is at the top of the list. I would also change the fuel filter. If you went heavy on the Seafoam, a fresh set of plugs would be in order as well. Go to the Members List and search the state of Iowa. Find the closest member and invite them over for lunch or arrange to meet them at their location for that Carb. Sync. Keep us posted on how this works out. A pic of your bike wouldn't hurt either. Or just really bad air filters. 5,000 miles may not be much, but for an 06, that bike has been sitting a LOT. All sorts of things could be in the air filters, and the fuel filter could easily be clogged from varnish (not to mention lots of potential problems inside the carbs). If all the header pipes are truly too hot to touch in 30 seconds after a cold start, then your problem must be either sufficient volume of fuel or sufficient volume of air. Goose

Goose My 1989 Suzuki had sat two summers before I bought it, and had similar problems at high revs. Turns out that the air intake was plugged with a mud dauber (wasp) nest. They were small enough to fly in and out of sight, to where it was nice and dry and [relatively] cool. I'd forgotten that. Thanks for the reminder that still makes me chuckle. Dave

This may sound like a dumb question but did you have the cowlings off while riding it? I had both cowlings off and a bent left engine guard and mine was doing the exact same thing. Would not run in 3rd gear. Peroid. Just cough and sputter. I got my new engine guard, installed it and the cowlings and it never happened again. Three thousand miles later and it still runs great. Me, my brother and son never figured it out. Sounds like you got it going but I'm still just curious since I never knew what was wrong with mine. Enjoy the Venture.

I would not have thought it would make any difference at all, but based on the report above and the fact you also have them off, I'm wondering . . . I can imagine the possibility that the air flow pattern around the fairing, forks and tank could create a current that would stream by the air box intakes in such a way as to work like a vacuum to lower the pressure at the filters. Next time I take the lowers off of mine I may take it out for a spin to test it. Goose Edited October 13, 2010 by V7Goose
