Carb swapping

Hello,

I have an 85 Venture Royale I picked up in pieces. Unfortunately the previous owner was nice enough to drop the carburetors off to get repaired and they were completely disassembled (a few torn diaphragms) and cleaned. Unfortunately, they were never reassembled and the gaskets inside the fuel bowl were removed and the fuel bowl o-rings were trashed. The bodies of the carbs look great! They also look like a crazy jigsaw puzzle with pieces missing.

By the time i buy new diaphragms and gaskets think it may be cheaper to get a set off EBay roughly $300.00 for a used set. However they are mostly second Gen 1300cc carbs.

Question 1: Did they change the bore size of the carb along with the displacement or did they just re-jet the carb?

Question 2: Can you swap the carbs from the later years to earlier

Question 3: Anybody just have a set of carb for a 1st Gen for sale, or maybe know a guy?

Thanks in advance -Ben

I would message a couple of members here for help, they are mechanics who know these machines well. Both seem to be able to get stuff the rest of us cant find and can supply knowledge also. I would try micarl and Skydoc to see if they can hook you up.

Here is a link for micarl's webpage http://www.thundervalleypower.com/ sorry i dont have one for skydoc

1st gen carbs are interchangeable as a set.

Jets changed for the MKII's from 117.5 to 125 mains, and the pilot jets are smaller. Going to a set of MKII's from a set of MKI's would help power on the 1200's.

Can't use anything but an 83 set on an 83 unless TCI is swapped due to vacuum port unique to 83 #2 carb. You can use an 83 set on later years.

2nd gen's would probably fit, but the venturi's are 2 mm smaller. Loss of horsepower.

1st gen Vmax's would also fit. Choke is different. Much bigger mains jets. I think venturi's are 1mm larger. Probably overkill unless cams are changed.

K&L Vmax carb rebuild kits will work on any year 1st Gen? (at least my 88 for sure) and have the gaskets you need.

Unless you are missing parts from your carb set you are probably as good off rebuilding what you have. Most likely any carb set you buy will need the same parts.
