I have an 2002 Dodge Ram 3.7L V6 standard cab 2 wheel drive

when I pull off from a light, the motor revs, but the truck sounds like a big rig, pulling away. I find it takes along time for it to shift thought the gears ( Automatic )

the truck has 154,000 on it. just slower then death off the start. any advice, will help.

Is the transmission fluid full?

How does your transmission fluid look and smell.

It should be clear red and not have a burnt smell.

 

Have you ever had the transmission fluid and screen changed?

I have mine changed every other year and have over 1/4 million miles on it now. (except that it is a GMC:whistling:)

DO NOT get it changed at one of the drive in oil change places. They stick a tube down the dipstick and suck out what they can and then just top it off, go to a real mechanic that will drop the pan and change the screen and will also be able to notice if there is any metallic debris in the pan indicating other problems.

It may be the fluid-clutch driven cooling fan for the rad. This makes it sound like the motor is revving but ya ain't really accelerating like it sounds it should be. I had the same thing on my '94 3.9L Dakota. Roared like crazy when starting off.... kept on like that for a while and then once the fan clutch released, quieted right down. It also sucked the power big time. I thought they changed these by 2002? Anyway, I replaced it and the new one did the same thing so then I drilled a hole and let the fluid escape so the fan was free-running all the time... that was fine but had overheating problems when I had to sit in heavy traffic on hot days. Finally got rid of the fan altogether and installed a thermostat controlled electric fan. Problem solved!

 

 

btw, I now have a '96 Dakota with the V8 ... get a bit of that symptom explained above but not for long and definately no lack of power in this puppy.

It's because the thing has a 3.7 liter V6 in it. That is a ridiculously small engine to put in a full size truck. That engine is way overworked with that much truck around it. I wouldn't buy even a Dakota without a V8 in it.

Clutch fan check the clutch fan........it will make it roar and suck up some of the power since it is low on power to begin with because of the 6 cylinder. I had one and thought I would have to push it sometimes.

If it's not shifting soon enough it could also be the Autromatic Transmission govoner? If you have one, it would be on the drivers side and round with a clip over it. Take clip off, pull govoner out spray with carb cleaner. Check nylon wheel. If its worn order a new one. $15 or so, better yet go to a transimission shop and get one from them, unless you can wait. That way you can get a filter there also.

Besides that do what was suggested above.

Myself, I'd take all bolts out of bottom pan but the two on each end. loosen these about 1/2 inch and take the two on one end completly out. Put a pan underneath and gently pry the end without bolts down. After fluids out remove pan and change filter. Most just push on. Clean pan and gasket re install and fill with fluid. I do this to all my automatic transmissions at 100,000 miles and have never had a problem with one.

Don't think so. I have one with a V8 in it and it doesn't act like that.

 

My Dad's did, may still do it but he traded it in.
