Venturous Randy Posted October 6, 2010 #26 Posted October 6, 2010 Now that my divorce is over and my EX has moved two states away and I am keeping the house and garage, I can think about doing something. Sooooo, my hopes are to pull the engine apart and replace the 86 good transmission that's in it with one out of a 2nd gen Venture, which I already have, get a V-Max rearend which I have promised as soon as I send some money and check all the valve clearances. I also may want to replace my left side bag and repaint a few things, and do some polishing. I have a good wood stove in the garage and should have plenty of good oak ready to burn, plus a small refrigerator to keep things cool. My intent is to make the bike a little more interstate ready for some longer trips next year and to be able to enjoy life. Life is good. RandyA
petekadish Posted October 6, 2010 #27 Posted October 6, 2010 Well, there's not much else which I can do to it. It's had just about everything done as far as upgrades, add-ons and improvements. So, I expect that I will do what I do every winter - (I'm in the cold part of Utah), I'll grumble a lot, complain about the cold, and when the streets are dry and clear, I'll gear-up and go ride when I can. I'll also use a lot of my indoor time to go through the few thousand pictures and video clips which we shot on rides throughout this past summer and then compile some awesome videos of those great rides. This is the best part of winter, because if I was able to be outside enjoying the warmth and the sunshine, I would never have any time to work on videos and picture editing. Be Safe! Pete.
gunboat Posted October 6, 2010 #28 Posted October 6, 2010 hi ruffy i would like to ask abouit your winter rebuild on your driving lights. you said your going to rewire them with led lights that cost $112.00 each. may i ask who has these light bulbs & what are the light watt output? thanks in advance don c.
SilvrT Posted October 6, 2010 #29 Posted October 6, 2010 Speaking of de-chroming.... I'll be looking into getting the gas cap de-chromed. Don't like the idea of the leather cover and don't think paint would last. I painted mine flat black two years ago and it's still not showing any signs of peeling, chipping, or any sort of deterioration. I cleaned it good with Lacquer thinners, let it dry and shot it with some sort of flat black spray can ... I think maybe it was either bumper paint or high-heat paint... can't recall.

Don't like the idea of the leather cover and don't think paint would last. Anyone powder coat their gas cap? Scuff with a Scotch Brite pad, vinyl wash etching primer, epoxy primer, spray with a good quality automotive paint. Some guys say that epoxy primer is all you need but I've had good luck with the vinyl wash. Used it on a lot of galvanized metal and never had an issue with the paint lifting. Not sure about powder coating over chrome. Might be ok too. My riding season ends once they sand/salt the roads the first time. Riding season starts after a couple heavy rains in the spring. Hmmmm..... if Gary N. has room on his trailer and wants riding company in February.... :-) Sorry, the trailer is full but if you can get to Texas, that would be great.
Motorcycle Mike Posted October 6, 2010 #31 Posted October 6, 2010 In January, when winter really sets in here, :rotfl:Your kidding right?:rotfl: Living in Jacksonvill Florida I'm suprised you can even spell winter. I may put some highway pegs up front and some lights on the rear. Other than that, I'm riding.
Eugene Posted October 6, 2010 #32 Posted October 6, 2010 Sorry, the trailer is full but if you can get to Texas, that would be great. Hey Gary - Ontario visits are not working this year - how about we try Texas???? I just started riding again after surgery and will be heading south Nov. 1 I stay in the Rio Grand Valley in Mission (about 1.5 hrs from Brownsville) - let me know where you are staying and maybe a February visit/ride would work. Eugene
sgn Posted October 6, 2010 #33 Posted October 6, 2010 About 20 of you should be installing solid motor mounts !
Guest PlaneCrazy Posted October 6, 2010 #35 Posted October 6, 2010 Well, my summer/fall was ruined by a broken ankle, so I won't be riding anything until the spring up here... but my Venture is going into the shop next week to get the Baron's lowering kit installed on it. Then when it comes back, I will wash it, wax it, change the oil, pull the battery, block it up, cover it and then put it to sleep for the winter At least it will be ready for me to hop back on in the spring and having the lowering kit on it will help me and my bad leg a lot. To combat the PMS, I have a 2007 Shadow in my dining room for the winter that I am tearing down and making a chopper out of. This will be the 4th bike I have had inside for the winter to work on http://www.750ace.com/files/tear_down_1.jpg

ken Posted October 7, 2010 #38 Posted October 7, 2010 All RSVs have the 4 hoses hanging out the bottom. They are various drains and should not be plugged off. They have nothing to do with the AIS system. If the AIS truly has been removed, all you have to do is remove the tubes connecting the front and rear carb boots and replace them with 4 caps. Very simple. The drain tubes are there , but the are four others that are plugged. One of them is rather larger 3/4" or so. I went through the AIS removal thread and it looks like the PO pluged the hoses and removed the hardware.
Freebird Posted October 7, 2010 #39 Posted October 7, 2010 In that case, all you need to do is remove the tube that connects the front and rear carbs on each side and just use 4 vacuum caps to cap off the ports.
Squidley Posted October 7, 2010 #40 Posted October 7, 2010 My plans are to get the time to put the '99 together and ride it and the Electra Glide all winter long

dingy Posted October 14, 2010 #44 Posted October 14, 2010 Working on a concept to put sequential turn signals on rear of bike. A series of pulsing LED arrows that work with the turn signals & hazards. LED's will be mounted in existing turn signal housing. Controlled by a digital circuit I am developing. Brake light will also activate turn signal lights and work in conjunction with turn signals. Gary
donaldj2242 Posted October 14, 2010 #45 Posted October 14, 2010 Plans for bike, STORAGE. Do have plans on getting my trailer ready for painting.
etcswjoe Posted October 14, 2010 #46 Posted October 14, 2010 I was thinking about taking the bike completely apart, painting, replacing springs and shocks.
GaryZ Posted October 14, 2010 #47 Posted October 14, 2010 The clutch in Red is slipping. So I'm going to take good clutch out of blonde and put in Red. Then put Skydoc clutch upgrade into Blonde Other than that...not much! :mo money: When does the clutch slip? Mine was slipping above 5k rpm under full throttle. I did not replace the clutch, only installed Earl's upgrade. No more slipping and my beast will pull straight through 5k and all the way to 8.5k!
mrich12000 Posted October 15, 2010 #48 Posted October 15, 2010 Strip the mule. Drop the engine Replace the damaged second gear bits. Polish the engine. Clean everything on the bike Hope to have the new digs with the heated garage Very nice Towney I found by some great Friends. tired of living in a basement suite. Need to get above the ground. Start to do the restore to the Honda 1984 VF 1000 Engines been done now to do the Repsol look with this one. Trans has somewhat a common issue: Second gear was out of the bike when I bought her Interceptor Rocket in the 3,4,5 gears but still needed the 2nd repair so after many months of searching for parts here and in Europe, finally gathered the parts to get her together, Many more parts and fairings to obtain along with the paint . Well you all get the picture what is on the winter plate for all of us . So all have fun getting the rides together...Cheers Mike R.. Having fun with this hobby..
Zfrebird4 Posted October 17, 2010 #49 Posted October 17, 2010 ... I just plan to ride, ... and soon replace my rear tire. I can only ride when it is 45+, and will be needing battery heated or electric gloves. Any advice on which will be appreciated. I need heat especially on my fingers! Ride to live, all! Zfrebird4
