Guest Posted October 8, 2010 #26 Posted October 8, 2010 The rear Avon tire I just replaced on my 99 was worn almost to the cords with no signs of checking/cracking. It had a "born-on" date of 07. Two sets of Metzelers lost chunks of rubber from the rear tire hence the switch back to Avons. Im guessing any tire can have its share of failures. Tire choice is getting pretty slim from my view. Theres always the Kendas and Ching Shen tires left. Ill just have to keep an eye out for any signs of cracking. Same as I have done on any tire I used over the years. But in the mean time, ill just stick with the Avons.
Condor Posted October 8, 2010 #27 Posted October 8, 2010 your assumption would be correct sir, and please don't take my remarks as an attack on your person, i just wanted and answer for my own curriosity about how people value the dollar over the safety? the cracks were down the center of the tread, just the same as some of my metzler tires were on earlier bikes. i liked the way the metzler performed, yet the cracks spooked me away from them. i have run several sets of michelins and they are a great product "for me" i have a set of e3's on at the moment and i'm still on the fence at this point, they wear very well, they handle the rain very well, but they are noisey..... i'm not sure just yet?? and just to keep things on an even "keel"..... i'm not floating a boat, i'm riding a motorcycle ok? why were the cracks discerning? I don't think you'll find anyone on this board who will sacrifice safety for the sake of a dollar, and I didn't take anything personally, but questioned your original statement 'why in sam help would you keep installing a product that could kill you' as very 'holier than thou' judgemental on your part. From that response, sir, I wonder why you even ride a bike due to the possible inheirent danger involved.

I am with Ruffy, had Avons with no issues, but I ran 48 in the rear and 42 up front, because i was 2 up 95% of the time. I am now running E3, no noise and about 16,000 on the rears and the front was 30,000. The only reason I tried E3 because of the cost, about 50$ cheaper per set than Avon, now they are about the same. So I am going back to Avon, just because I believe the Avon stick better than the E3

Jerry W Posted October 9, 2010 #32 Posted October 9, 2010 I look at any tire I ride. I have had Avon replaced due to cracking, I have also had a Dunlop replaced due to cracking. I still run Avons.
