Marcarl Posted October 5, 2010 #27 Posted October 5, 2010 Now how did Squid get in CLASSIFIED ADS,,,, are we trying to sell him,,,,, hope he goes by the pound,,,,, and then maybe we got others that would bring a good price. ?????? Hummmm????? does it matter what we fattened 'em up with????,,,,, cheesecake or ice cream ?????
OutlawRider Posted October 5, 2010 #28 Posted October 5, 2010 (edited) Hi Guys and Gals, I do not post alot but I lerk and learn. I do look at the ads. I have loaned out my carb tune to an other venture rider. I do not know if he is still a member, but he got me started. If you still have problems after your changes,Don. I think Squidly might be on to something as far as putting a length of time as a member before you can post. Maybe the 2.00 charge would work and and funds to the site. What ever Don desides I am sure we will agree with. He does a great job taking care of this site and us. That is my 2 cents worth. Richard Edited October 5, 2010 by OutlawRider
BradT Posted October 5, 2010 #29 Posted October 5, 2010 Well, I just changed it so that only supporting members can post to the classifieds. We'll try that for a while. I may add a "pay" section for outsiders who wish to post . If you do can you make it very clear that the article for sale is not a member. Personally do not have a problem trusting any members here however I may be a bit reserved with non members. Just a thought
Freebird Posted October 5, 2010 Author #30 Posted October 5, 2010 I appreciate the comments folks. We'll see how it goes now. Just to clarify for anybody who may be misunderstanding though, there will NEVER be an additional charge for supporting members to post to the classifieds. Any discussion about paid classifieds would be for non-members and even then only on a pre-approved basis.

spear Posted October 5, 2010 #34 Posted October 5, 2010 Hey Don, I think that Aussie connection was me - asking permission to use the logo with a map of Australia on it. A biker chick here in Oz has her own patch designing and manufacturing business (runs it from home) and she does a fantastic job. Makes ALL my patches and badges for me. I'll ask her if she was bold enough to try and sneak in and advertise her wares on OUR site. (I know she is a member of the Ulysses Club down under [as am I] and she advertises on that site.) If she did I'll severely reprimand her, admonish her, and do whatever else is required by you. Sorry boss.
Freebird Posted October 5, 2010 Author #35 Posted October 5, 2010 No, I don't think it was her. I think it was an American based company that posted them here. There was an Australian company that had our patches listed on their website though. One with the map of Australia in the background and another with a map of the USA in the background. I didn't mind you having a patch made up and specifically gave you permission to do so but I don't want anybody selling them online to whomever. I sent that site an email informing them that they were using our logo without permission. I never heard back from them but they did remove the patches from their site. I don't know if that was your lady or not. If so, I apologize for any confusion but they should not have been selling them.
515Rod Posted October 5, 2010 #36 Posted October 5, 2010 I, for one check the ads once in awhile and have bought a couple of things. However I also look to see the sellers status. I have alot more trust and confidence buying from a supporting member than a Trial Member or an expired member. All I can say is thanks to Don, This is the best site of which I've been a member.

Supporting members should always come first anyway! Not sayin' ALL trial members are freeloaders though! Ya know?
Guest PlaneCrazy Posted October 5, 2010 #38 Posted October 5, 2010 Folks, I have been somewhat struggling with a decision lately in regard to our classified section. We had a person join as a trial member and then posted an ad in our classifieds for some patches. I may end up making the classifieds for supporting members only and even then, I don't want to have people joining at $12.00 per year only for the purpose of hawking their goods on our site. The fact is, if I allowed people to start using the site and our classifieds as a store at $12.00 per year, this would end up being nothing but a spam filled site and I just won't allow that to happen. I just deleted the ad for patches in our classifieds and will be watching closely that it doesn't continue to happen. I block memberships here almost every day from spammers in China, India and other places that I know want nothing more than to spam our forum. It is a non-ending battle that requires me to be on constant lookout. Very rarely one will get through and we will see some spam posts but they are deleted quickly and those responsible are permanently banned from the site. I was also made aware today of a site in Australia that has VentureRider patches listed for sale. I don't know who the actual person is behind the site but I have not authorized that our logo be used for any retail purpose outside of our own products listed here on the site in the VentureRider Merchandise forum area. I do vaguely remember a request from a member some time ago asking if he could use our logo and put the outline of Australia in the background. I had no problem with that for one's personal use but NOT to be sold. There have been a few times over the years when I have received requests from members to reproduce our logo on their trailer or other items and I've never had a problem with that but again, that is for your own personal use ONLY. NOT to be reproduced and sold retail. If you find our logo being sold on products outside of this site, please let me know and PLEASE do not purchase those items. I've run a forum for the Honda Shadow ACE for 7+ years now and I have it protected against most of the automated registration bots. However, there seems to be a large number of idiots from some Western African nations as well as the usual mix of Asian spammers who are actually taking the time to fill the registration forms out and activate their accounts just so they can post a couple of threads trying to sell some iPhones. In fact, I got hit so many times from Nigeria that I had to ban the whole domain of that Country's main ISP. I know exactly what your dealing with here and I will be sure to report anyone using your corporate identity outside this site.
Solodadof2 Posted October 5, 2010 #39 Posted October 5, 2010 Personally I have bought quite a few items out of the classifieds and have advertised and sold some items. I too believe that you should have limited access to the site if you are a trial member such as being able to access the classifieds for purpose of purchasing but cannot place an add till you are a fulltime member. It is much cheaper to pay $12 a year than to sell on Ebay! and you do not have to deal with the spam you get on craigslist, and finally you can be rest assured you are going to have a fairly safe transaction. Maybe you could set up a way to charge trial members or non-members ,this would possibly encourage them to join. disclaimer: No animals were injured while forming this opinion, please do not try this at home without adult supervision.
Sideoftheroad Posted October 5, 2010 #40 Posted October 5, 2010 For the classified section could the post be pre-approved before it gets posted? I am sure the other forum admin's could help in the approval process if you get alot of requests. This way for those trying to sell their wares w/out permission, it gets squashed in the approval process and never gets posted.
saltcreep Posted October 5, 2010 #41 Posted October 5, 2010 The classifieds section is a barren area.. If it is related, why not let them post? If it gets out of hand.. you can bring down the ban-hammer and clean it up.
dunvilsteev Posted October 5, 2010 #42 Posted October 5, 2010 Call me old .... call me unhealthy ...... But personally, I enjoy fried spam and beans.
Freebird Posted October 5, 2010 Author #43 Posted October 5, 2010 The classifieds section is a barren area.. If it is related, why not let them post? If it gets out of hand.. you can bring down the ban-hammer and clean it up. You have no idea how much time it takes to watch for and later delete all the posts here about items for sale. If they are posted in the proper area, the classifieds, they get automatically deleted when they expire. When they are posted in the forum, I have to go back and search for them and then delete them at some time or another. I have asked many times that people NOT post their for sale items in the forums but that request has gone ignored for the most part. Even when people DO post an item in the classifieds, they usually find it necessary to post here to tell everybody that they posted it there. Sort of defeats the purpose.

I, for one, did not realize this. Sorry.

I run 3 sites/forums.. I used to get really frustrated with things like people running the board by posting 1 message in each section, etc.. and I'd have to go clean it up, but I have mods on there to do that for me, so I don't have to fool with it anymore. I definetly understand about the chinese/russian spammers.. I deny anyone from gmail from even registering anymore... as it seems like these last couple of years 99% of the spam addresses were from gmail. Just throwing in my opinion was all, sounded like you were fishing for how folks felt about it. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Freebird Posted October 5, 2010 Author #46 Posted October 5, 2010 I'm sorry if I made you feel that your input was not welcome, that was not my intent. I was just trying to explain my reasoning for TRYING to separate the classifieds from the forums. I agree with you about Gmail. It is a constant battle and Yahoo can be also but a lot of folks continue to use them. I use a different method here that works fairly well weeding those spammers out.
saltcreep Posted October 5, 2010 #47 Posted October 5, 2010 You didn't say anything that would make me think that. I find myself being too blunt at times, so I often preface what I am saying with an expression to say that this is just my opinion. I'm getting grumpier as I get older.. It is only a matter of time before I'm sitting out front yelling at kids to get off my lawn :)
