Bonsaicat Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 My bike has been chosen for alternative fuel. I have to add a car 140 amp alternator to my 92 venture royale. Any idea how?* Thanks in advance. Was thinking of bolting straight onto the stator nut. Or putting a pulley there? Thanks! Lee
Marcarl Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Add it to the clutch side, may stop the whine. And OH, just weld it in place.
etcswjoe Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 You remember the old bicycle lights that had the generator that rested on the tire?

etcswjoe Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 (edited) Did a Google search and there are a number of people who have mounted a car altenator to thier Bike. http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/260217.jpg Edited September 29, 2010 by etcswjoe I need to learn how to spell
Bummer Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Did a Google search and there are a number of people who have mounted a car altenator to thier Bike. That should be a very interesting bike. I've rebuilt a couple of those engines a number of times. If I dig deep enough I'll bet I can find a set of those alloy pushrod tubes and an oversized oil pan somewhere in the basement.
Wizard765 Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 I had a friend with a 1200 GL and he did an aftermarket switch to a car alternator. It worked well and gave him lots of juice...

Thom Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 used to put car generators on 45 flathead HDs . mounted on the front and used a vbelt off the primary . that looks like a pancake VW motor , done that too , used a Delco 30 amp single wire alt.
etcswjoe Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 LOL, I thought that was a Corvair engine. I think it's a VW engine.
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 You remember the old bicycle lights that had the generator that rested on the tire? OLD? What is old about them.... I still have a couple....... OLD ?
Dano Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 (edited) LOL, I thought that was a Corvair engine. Corvairs are a lot nicer looking, alternator is on the left side, carbs go in the heads in a different location and we don't need stacks! We just slap on a 4bbl or a turbo and go to town! PS..... that ones lacking a couple of cylinders........ Edited September 30, 2010 by Dano
Monty Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Yeah, I already looked it up. The Corvair has the fan on top of the engine, and the alternator sits sideways. I helped build a 180HP turbo a few years back. VERY expensive engine to build.
Dano Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 I have 2 motors in my garage (4bbl and a turbo) and a 65 2 door in the driveway. One of these days I plan on playing with them.
