seforeman Posted November 2, 2007 #1 Posted November 2, 2007 I purchased a new ignition switch to replace my old one. However - I cannot figure out how to remove the 2 bolts that hold the ignition switch on !!! The bolt heads are smooth with a flat top in the center - and they are threaded into a base witch is welded to the frame. Is there a special tool I need to remove these - or is this a drill the bolt out and replace them? I am hoping someone knows the secret to this? Thanks in advance.. Stuart
Tartan Terror Posted November 2, 2007 #2 Posted November 2, 2007 you will need to modify the bolts. Look in this thread and it should help. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2628 Also if you look in the tech section you will see for the 2nd Gen energency Ignition repair, that has info too Scotty
bigbob Posted November 2, 2007 #3 Posted November 2, 2007 To remove mine I drilled a 5/16 hole in the centre of the head this will cut the head off, then I used a pair of visegrip on the stud to turn them off. Hope this makes sence to you. Ride safe: Bigbob
muffinman Posted November 2, 2007 #4 Posted November 2, 2007 Bob a drill and easy outs is the proper way to remove the bolts.Take the studs that are left and go to the hardware store and get replacement bolts with allen heads. The original bolts are just for theft proofing of the switch. You do not need to use break off head bolts unless you want to.Some locksmiths carry them but they are a bit pricey. Jeff
BradT Posted November 3, 2007 #5 Posted November 3, 2007 There on there tight, so I ended up grinding the bolt that was welded to the frame off, then they just came out. Replaced them with a bolt and nut. Made it much simplier. Brad
