DevilDog Posted September 27, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2010 It looks like my speedometer finally gave up the ghost. Anyone know what speedometers are compatible with an 84? I find everything from 83 to 91 but no 84s. I figure it would be easier to replace the whole instrument console than the speedometer itself but wanted to make sure everything would play well together before I buy a part from a different year. Thanks.
dingy Posted September 27, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 27, 2010 The graphics changed in 86 I think. This is what is silk screened to the face of the speedometer. The tach has a matching style of graphics on it. Any speedometer head will physically work from 83 to 93. I put my 83 speedo & tach in the 88 cluster I used when I rebuilt bike this winter. I wanted to keep the actual mileage that was on the 83 unit. Attached are a couple of pictures of the two graphic styles I am aware of. There is at least one more style of tach due to the cruise light in the 84 & 85 MKI's Gary
skydoc_17 Posted September 27, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 27, 2010 Hey Carl, Any of the MKI VR Instrument Consoles (1983 to 1985) will be a direct replacement for your 84'VR. If you find the entire console, you could remove the speedo and put it in your console or just swap the entire console, your choice. Earl

Earl U Sure? i know my 85 Royales console is the same as the 86 and up, and is the same as the one on the right on Dingys pics. I know its different from 83 which is the pic on the left. skydoc_17 Posted September 27, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 27, 2010 Hey Brian, When I referenced the Part Numbers for the 1984, 1985 and 1986 AMERICAN VR's here's what I got: Speedo Assembly for respective models: 1984-41R-83570-A0-00 1985-41R-83570-A0-00 1986-1NL-83540-A0-00 I am in no way saying that you are not correct Brian, perhaps the Canadian models got the face lift on the dash console before the US bikes did. Because Devildog is in Texas, I assumed his bike was an American Model and I only have direct access to the American data. Perhaps a check with your local Canadian Yamaha Dealer will show something different for the Canadian models or perhaps your dash console was replaced with the MKII console? A standard console has very different wiring from a Royale wiring. Shown in the two pictures in the second post of this thread is an 84 or 85 MKI Royale cluster. This can be determined by the cruise control light in the tach. Below are pictures of the back of the standard & the Royale clusters. Note the difference in the wire connectors to the CMU. Standard cluster is on the left. Gary
DevilDog Posted September 28, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted September 28, 2010 Thanks for all the help guys. I picked up an 86 model and will see how it goes. If the console won't line up, I'll just swap out the speedo. Thanks again.
