LilBeaver Posted September 24, 2010 #1 Posted September 24, 2010 Well, I took a few hours this evening to give a friend of mine a hand moving. She had a bunch of bulky and heavy items she couldn't get her self, so no big deal. Got them moved to her new place. On my way out, we were chatting in the front of her building when another young lady walked up. We all three talked for a few minutes (apparently this gal is the mother of three young boys). I saw one of them bolt out towards my bike and was a little uneasy because I didn't want him to get hurt. I got close behind him and saw his curious little hands and big eyes looking at himself in the [dirty] chrome parts that are just the right height for him to see him self. Despite the 'don't touch the shiny parts, they are really hot and WILL hurt you' the boy looked at me and said he really liked it and asked if it was mine. I responded "thank you very much, and yes it is". I mentioned again that he needs to take a step back because it is hot and it will hurt him. Well, he asked some other questions about it (as a curious little 4 year old would do) and I started fishing around in my trunk to get my helmet and stuff out so I could take off while he was once again was drawn to the shiny parts. Despite the additional reminder of you can look but don't touch, he turned and looked at his mom then looked back at himself and with his little pointer finger very quickly poked at the image of him self in the side of the cover that encases the clutch basket (all of this was within a matter of seconds and I couldn't get to him in time to stop him). My bike had sat there for no more than 10 minutes after being ridden for probably about an hour. It wasn't really hot, but it was hot enough that he learned his lesson. He didn't cry but he wasn't happy about it either. Anyways, by this time the other one was out asking questions too. They both wanted to go for a ride, but settled for sitting on it. They got a kick out of that. In addition to sitting on it, I suggested that if one of them wanted to hear something cool, push this little black button... The air-horn blasted and boy that surprised them both (and the mother too). Anyways, the 10 or 15 minutes I spent answering their questions and letting them ooo and ahh, really reminded me of what it was like to be that age and be so excited to head to my grandparents house. I would always get a ride on my grandpa's wing when we went over there and I always remember how excited my grandpa was when I would ask him about his bike. These are not my kids, and I am a ways away from having kids but seeing how excited they were about my bike brought back some memories and I just thought I would share.
oldgoat Posted September 24, 2010 #2 Posted September 24, 2010 them little ones can get to you man trust me...
Guest scarylarry Posted September 24, 2010 #3 Posted September 24, 2010 Wish I had that much trust, I wouldn't have let them near it, unless the parent wanted to sign a wavier from hell..... That is a real shame to on my part..
mini-muffin Posted September 24, 2010 #4 Posted September 24, 2010 We've done that before, even took pics and sent them to the parents. It's so cool seeing them so excited. Margaret
hunter 1500 Posted September 24, 2010 #5 Posted September 24, 2010 That's really cool. I wasn't much older then them when I went for a ride on a friend of my older sisters Norton Comando. After that I always loved motorcycles. Started out riding a Honda 50 cc when I was about 13 on the back roads.
Freebird Posted September 24, 2010 #6 Posted September 24, 2010 You done good. You say that you are a long way from having your own but I don't know....it looks like the kiddos bring you a lot of joy...I'm thinking it may be time. Of course, you will probably need to find a willing partner to pull it off.
Tom Posted September 24, 2010 #7 Posted September 24, 2010 Reminded me of a trip I took to the Grand Canyon and 3 Korean gals came up with a camera pointing,(they didnt speak english) Stupid me I took the camera and pointed for them to line up to get their picture made and they quit smiling and laughed and could only say"No No,Picture with you and scooter"..I did that and then pointed to it and asked if they wanted to sit on it..well no understand so I picked one up and sat her on the drivers seat..her feet would only touch the PASSENGER boards she was so short but the Smile on her face seemed to swallow the Grand Canyon!
Ponch Posted September 24, 2010 #8 Posted September 24, 2010 Thanks for this thread, Ricker. I got much the same feeling at Gig"s mait. day a few years ago. Evan Posted September 24, 2010 #9 Posted September 24, 2010 Good story Rick! My four grandkids are a major source of joy in my life --- and yes --- every one of them has sat on my VR which is called "Papa's motorcycle". My one daughter has said that as soon as we can find a small enough helmet, I can take them for a ride.

Dave77459 Posted September 24, 2010 #12 Posted September 24, 2010 Great story! I love sharing my bike with people who are enthused. All sorts of kids like to look at themselves in the shiny bike. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3121/2832290930_0050460702.jpg
1Beast Posted September 24, 2010 #13 Posted September 24, 2010 I was lucky enough to find the right person after 26 yrs single. She has 2 daughter 10 & 12 yrs old. They love it when I drop them off at a friends house on the bike. They are always asking for rides and I have to admit it makes me feel old and wise to tell them about cycles and the do's and don'ts of it all. I just became a grandpa and can't wait to take my grandaughter for her first ride. I can hear the squeals of suprise already.
Dave3 Posted September 24, 2010 #15 Posted September 24, 2010 My boys are so proud to tell their friends that they get to ride with me. I'm glad I get to give them the joy of bikes, that I didn't have when I was a kid.
