GaStar Posted September 23, 2010 #1 Posted September 23, 2010 For some reason at a redlight I looked down at the side of my engine. I noticed that the carb joints were pulsating with the engine. Fine right? There are huge cracks in the boots. Looked bad. Looks like 55 and 70 for left and right times 2 = 250 bucks. Ouch. Of course I don't want to be left on the side of the road either. I know how to find vehicle junkyards but haven't seen many bike yards. Anybody know where I can get some? I scanned ebay and didn't see any. Also might be a good time to upgrade my 97 RSTC to the 32mm Venture carbs. Anyone have a source on those either? I do plan to be a contributing member, may payup tomorrow. (no work tomorrow gonn abe home all day) I am in Gainesville, ga. Thanks very much.
V7Goose Posted September 23, 2010 #2 Posted September 23, 2010 This is a normal situation. Despite how badly the boots crack, I have never found one leaking. In fact, the pulsing you see pretty much proves it is not leaking. To test them, spray each one with carb cleaner or WD40 while the bike is idling. If there is a vacuum leak, the engine speed will change. To see what that will sound like, pull off one of the rubber caps on the nipples for syncing the carbs and spray a bit in there. , and WELCOME Goose
GaStar Posted September 23, 2010 Author #3 Posted September 23, 2010 Didn't think they were leaking. Wouldn't be running so well of course. I gotcha there. I am going to do the Saddle Sore 1000 in November and I don't want to be far from the house and develop a leak. Know what I mean? Trying to be pre-emptive on this. I appreciate the input. They just look really bad.
jburrell Posted September 23, 2010 #4 Posted September 23, 2010 The best place to get used parts is from PINWALL cycles out of Ohio. They part out all kinds of RSV and I have even seen the with salvage ones with less than 1k miles. They break em completely down. You could contact them via the web or call them and tell them what you need. Use the part guide available on this site, to give them the exact name/pn and perhaps email them a pic of what you want. Prices are OK and service is good. Hope this helps I'm leaving on a 2700 mile journey next week to the Dragon in NC. Have a good and safe trip

ToyOdie Posted September 24, 2010 #6 Posted September 24, 2010 (edited) I had the same issue with my 96 RSTD. Last week I pulled the carbs off and used Plastic Dip to coat the intake boots. I had some good size cracks, but none of them came close to going all the way through. The Plastic Dip worked like a dream. At the Home Depot they have both spray on and brush on in the paint department with the spray paint. Make sure the surface is CLEAN. I used soap, water, and a brush then rubbing alcohol. I tried the spray on first, but it wouldn't fill the cracks so I went and got the brush on and a can of naptha. Brush a coat of the Plastic Dip on and before it dries brush it with the naptha, (you can use the same brush). The brush marks will disapear and you get a nice smooth finish. I waited about an hour and applied a second coat. All my cracks are gone. It took me about 5 hours total from start to finish to complete the whole project. (I had never taken my carbs off before, so I took my time) After I put everthing back together I did a carb sync. It really isn't that hard if you take your time and pay attention how things came apart. One tip, the wireing harness on the left frame rail needs to be moved in and above the carbs BEFORE you lift the carbs. If you don't the carb assy will not fit through the opening and is very hard to get back in place to move the harness. (don't ask me how I know) Good luck Edited September 24, 2010 by ToyOdie
GaStar Posted September 24, 2010 Author #7 Posted September 24, 2010 Awesome idea. I will try and do this tomorrow. I will even try and take some pics. Thanks! I had the same issue with my 96 RSTD. GaStar Posted September 26, 2010 Author #8 Posted September 26, 2010 I did the plasti dip trick. Wow did it work like a charm! The only problem is that o found that the 2 leftside carbs are leaking. Searching for rebuild kits. The other problem is that I found that the 2 right side spark plug boots were not all the way seated. They are now. Of course now I have a slight hesitation in the throttle off idle. I looked through the manual and didn't see a lean/rich adjustment, only carbsync instructions. Any ideas? Thanks for all the help guys!

Thanks for all the help guys! Congradulations! I told you that it wasn't that hard. I looked in the manual and couldn't find an idle mix / lean/rich screw. I think I remember reading of that adjustment in a thread somewhere. A good carb sync should take care of the problem. You might try running some Seafoam in the gas for a couple of tanks, that helped my performance quite a bit. I run it about every 5th tank now just for maintance.
