Well Goose,

Does he mean this group or the one he rides with? What makes you so sure he is refering to this club? Read the 1st & 2nd paragraph. I took it to mean the club he actually rides with.

As far as I am concerned, ALL comments here, from the OP, me, and anyone else, have absolutely nothing to do with Ventiureriders.

The OP specifically requested thoughts and suggestions concerning his desire to try and impose his values on some group with which he rides. My comments were specifically directed at that, and only that. I care absolutely nothing about whether his group tries to dictate morals on the riders or not, but he asked for thoughts about his desire to try to change THEM (that other riding group), and that is what I and some others offered.

As for all the people here who offered comments on their own drinking decisions while riding, while they do not specifically address his request for suggestions, they DO give him some idea how others feel about the subject in general.

I apologize to all for any failures I have in writing so that my thoughts and opinions are not completely clear. I do not care if anyone agrees with me, but there is no point in participating in a discussion if you are not understood.

I do NOT apologize for not being politically correct. PC has no place in my life, but I will try to avoid a diatribe on how vile it is.

Maybe thats why I thought you were coming on too strong!

I just didn't understand what the heck you were saying!!

:rotf::rotf::rotf:

As far as being politically correct....NP!

Some of the best humour is politically incorrect.

I have no prejiduce toward any body's beliefs.

Well....that's not really true....I hate the lifestyle of some people...and strongly disagree with many religious beliefs....but I guess it's a matter of "hate the sin, love the sinner"

My point is that we can express our differing opinions without getting personal or insulting about it.

Believe me...I know of which I talk!

I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses....and as I'm sure you know, as we go out in our ministry, we discuss religion...which is a VERY personal thing.

We always try to discuss some intense things in a calm and non-judgemental manner, and often have to "Defuse" some pretty intense situations.

we meet hundreds of people as we go try to teach Bible truths, trying to help people learn what the Bible Really Teaches.

I'm sure some here will argue "you teach Your truths!".

I guess when we prove our statements, taken from the Bible, in the proper context, people respect that...if not us.

I'd be happy to discuss that further thru PM's if anybody would like to but that is not what this posting is about.

I really enjoy this site...and the folks in it although I have yet to personally meet a single one.

I would not like to see anyone feel unwelcome for expressing their opinion if it is done so in a mild manner, without malace or prejiduce.

I have been away, and not had time to check back with this discussion that I started. I wanted to explain that, lest anybody think I would be put off or offended by some of the blunter comments. Political correctness is vastly over-rated, and has led to much confusion in my not very humble opinion.

Many very interesting comments and thoughts. Thank you to all who contributed.

It had never occurred to me when I asked this question that it was a moral issue. My concerns are entirely about the safety of every rider in my Club. When riding in groups, the actions of one rider can very quickly impact the safety of others in the group.

I enjoy a drink, and always have. There was a time when I would occasionally drink so much that I was incapable of walking home... and therefore had to drive (that is waaaay too close to a true story). The number of candles on my birthday cake have perhaps helped me to see the light, and I realize how much one's judgment can be impaired by alcohol.

I absolutely agree that the degree of impairment will vary from person to person. But as the degree of impairment begins with the first drink, I am not sure that it is appropriate to leave the decision with the individual who is drinking.

My purpose in raising this topic for discussion with the Coast Riders will be to see whether there is consensus on the idea of setting a guideline or even a rule of no drinking while riding. This way I would hope to avoid any awkward situations on the road, with the possibility of leaving an impaired rider to get home alone.

If the discussion at my Club reflects the discussion on this site... we are in for some interesting times.

I am not sure whether it is appropriate to ask this: if you have anything further to add to this discussion, could you please limit it to:

Consumption of alcohol while riding as a safety issue.

If you wish to discuss religion or morality, start your own thread!:witch_brew:

Thanks again for all your thoughts. Even the twisted and wrong ones make interesting reading.:stirthepot:

I agree with you 100 %

Well, I know (or at least figgure) I'll get a lot of flack from what I have to say but here goes....

I do not see this (VR.org) as a "club" but rather, a group of folks who've joined into an on-line forum because of a few commonalities. We ride a motorcycle and moreover, we ride a Venture. We have various "get-togethers" and rallys but as yet, we are not a "club" as other clubs go. The minute it becomes a club, with "rules and regulations", etc, etc... that will be the day I depart.

As for the drinking and riding... I do admit, I will allow myself a max of 2 beers and frankly, if anyone isn't happy with that, they can choose to not ride with me. If, because of the 2 beers, they don't want me riding in their "group", so be it... I am just as happy to ride alone and I'll see ya all at the next stop...or not.

I ride a great deal with groups (mixed bikes) with Coast Riders. I have noticed several riders who will have a beer (just one) at lunch time. There are a couple who will have more than one.

I am thinking of suggesting that the Club adopt a strict "No alcohol while riding" policy.

I am certainly not against drinking in the afternoon/evening when finished riding for the day. Also, I know we are all adults, and should be able to decide for ourselves whether or not a single beer would affect riding judgment. My concern is that somebody might drink more than they should. A pint of a stronger beer, is quite different from a can of American beer (sorry, couldn't resist). Also to be considered is the health, age, body size and several other factors that would affect the way a rider reacts to that "one drink".

People can make their own decisions if they are riding on their own. But it seems to me that there is a greater risk when riding at some speed in a group, and when there is only one second between you and two other bikes. Yes, staggered formation... but that stagger doesn't make much difference when something happens quickly.

Any of you belong to a Club with such a policy? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Cheers!

I like simplicity - I will NOT drink and ride and I will NOT ride with anyone who does - doesn't matter if its one or ten beers.

As Road Captain of the MC I used to belong to, I saw a few bikers get far too gone to ride safely. Those poor souls were yanked from their scoots and put into the chase car and their bikes loaded on the trailer. They got a lot of trash from everyone else when we got back from wherever, and it usually never happened to them again. I will leave LOTS of room if one of the riders in my group seems to have had too much, but I will NEVER tell him what that amount is. I will take his keys and find another way to get him home if he over indulges, however. On a personal note, I limit myself to 1 normal beer, or 1 glass of wine, or 1 oz of booze in a 3 hour period. :bluesbrother:

I guess it all comes down to, do you trust the people your riding with?

How do you know someone isn't out back, smoking a joint or shooting up or popping pills?

In a BIG MC club your going to have a cross section of society.

Good luck with weeding them out.:080402gudl_prv:

Can't see the fun in riding in large groups anyway???

Way to much DRAMA... Someones always complaining, or, trying to catch up, or, eatin someone elses dust...

I won't ride with dope heads, alcoholics, or pill poppers.

Therefore I do not ride in large groups. I just ride with people I Know in small groups. It's much safer and fun that way.. :Avatars_Gee_George:
