Trader Posted September 19, 2010 #1 Posted September 19, 2010 Well....I took the standard out for a boot today....not bad but really wobbley in the curves. It supposedly has a newer clutch but it was slipping when I really twisted it.. Worse thing....I had it on the side stand....and twisted the handlebars towards the right....I heard a BANG and it suddenly wanted to lean a LOT more! Found out the bang was when the side stand bolt snapped off! Without the bolt holding it together, the stand "fork" was spreading from the weight of the bike...so it was leaning more than ususal. It probably would have fallen over if I had just let it go. So now I gotta find a new bolt. It looks like a special bolt with the bushing built into it.

Snaggletooth Posted September 19, 2010 #3 Posted September 19, 2010 Welcome to the world of heavy, old, worn bikes!! It's a real hoot getting off one of these things without a kick stand ain't it. Go with Dingy's fix. Easy, inexpensive and strong enough to do the job. I had an extra sidestand when mine broke but I did Dingys mod and went with that. I ordered another bolt for the other stand in case of future problems. Hope it never happens again. I'm not fond of singing alto. Mike

jasonm. Posted September 21, 2010 #6 Posted September 21, 2010 (edited) Clutch slipping. Make sure the reservoir is NOT full. You want it half full. This allows for heat expansion of the fluid. Glad you did not get hurt. Does anyone really know if there is a specific reason for the bolt breaking? Like being loose or corrosion? Edited September 22, 2010 by jasonm.

Took the standard to the local stealer today to get a safety check. I figure I may as well ride this one until the end of the season then steal all the best parts for my 83 blonde VR during the winter. Should be an interesting time for a "non-mechanical" guy like me. I plan to: install progressive springs in the front of the VR install Condor brace on VR install a heavy clutch upgrade in the VR exchange the new stator that is in the standard into the VR move the TCI to the air box on both repair all the plastic on both bikes Paint both bikes have the seat re-upholstered on both bikes install new diaphrams in VR Install new plugs, wires, and battery cables in VR do the battery resistor mod on the VR install stainless brake lines on VR do the drive shaft lube on both Any other suggestions?????
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted September 22, 2010 #8 Posted September 22, 2010 I know that bang ! Mine snapped in the garage when I turned the bars also. Mine snapped the fork and the bike went over into the shelving unit in the side of the shop. Took me the wife and one of my sons to pick it back up from the high side. I am fortunate that I have a machinist at work I could call on for the repair to the stand.

You should add a swing arm service, pumpkin service, clean and rebuild all brake cylinders and masters, as well as the clutch slave cylinder. And there is more, but those are some of the safety issues that come to mind. Sounds like you got something to keep you busy, hope the fire is warm. Carl

Just a little FYI, if someone had the clutch master cylinder apart and put the push rod back in backwards, it will also make the clutch slip a bit when you get on her in fourth or fifth gear. Number three in the picture. That's what happened to mine when I got it. You might also want to check that bushing while your at it. Mine was pretty well worn. That's number four. It sell for about $5.

Are rebuild "Kits" available that have all neccessary parts? Rebuild kits come with a new piston, rubber cup, and spring. The lever side isn't included. Y probably.... On the side stand. Try picking up another SS on Ebay. Once the yoke has been bent out of shape, reshaping it, and getting the new bolt to thread will be near impossible....
