Wiring harness the same?

you might have noticed I just picked up an 84 Standard venture.

 

Wondering if the wiring harness is the same as a VR?

 

Meaning....could I buy the goodies and make a standard into a VR or are all the plugs and connections just not there?

I'm not 100% positive, but I dont think it is, I believe there are 2 different harnesses for the standard and royale.

An 83 harness is completely different from later models. Turn signal flasher relays, starter relay and fuel pump control circuit come to mind.

 

84 & 85 are close, but still are some different connectors. Different fuel pump relay circuitry.

 

A bike with cruise is different from a bike without cruise. This is due to the brake and clutch levers having different contact configurations and cruise connectors.

 

I don't know if they made a separate harness number for the units that had CB's and CLASS systems as opposed to those that didn't.

 

A Royale unit is different from the standard unit. Different instrument cluster connections.

 

This is one of the short comings of the parts fiche. I have not found where they list part numbers for the upgrade options.

To be clear....just asking if they use the SAME wiring harness for both MK1 models....

 

The VR with the goodies mounted in and the standard without hardware...but same harness????

A Royale unit is different from the standard unit. Different instrument cluster connections.

 

Royale models have the gear shift indicator & stop watch functions at bottom center of instrument cluster.

In a nutshell, no! You can use a Royale harness on a standard, but not the other way, me thinks. You can pick up a Royale harness on Fleabay relatively cheap though...
