22lyons Posted September 16, 2010 #1 Posted September 16, 2010 Just bought my first venture 2000 and speedo is over ten mph off. Looking forward to all the help. thanks
Squidley Posted September 16, 2010 #2 Posted September 16, 2010 Larry, Thats the way they are, off by about 8% from actual speed. Some of our members have installed the Speedo healer and corrected the descrepancy, Welcome to the club.
22lyons Posted September 16, 2010 Author #3 Posted September 16, 2010 are you serious...90mph reading is actual 78...don't like that a bit. guess i sould have put this in second gen
Squidley Posted September 16, 2010 #4 Posted September 16, 2010 Dead serious, @ 80 mph your only doing about 72. I know others will chime in and comment on the speedo healers, it's on my list for my '99
22lyons Posted September 16, 2010 Author #5 Posted September 16, 2010 guess i am glad i got a steal of a deal...now makes me wonder....
etcswjoe Posted September 16, 2010 #6 Posted September 16, 2010 How much of the error is because of non-OEM tires? :2cents:Comparing my GPS to the speedo 8% off is pretty close to my error and I am running Venoms.
Squidley Posted September 16, 2010 #7 Posted September 16, 2010 guess i am glad i got a steal of a deal...now makes me wonder.... Larry, Nothing to worry about, all of the 2nd gens are that way, not just your bike. You compensate for it or fix it with the speedo healer. I use a GPS and it give actual speed so it's really not an issue. You have got one of the best touring bikes made, ride it till the wheels fall off it in a few hundred thousand miles
Motorpig Posted September 16, 2010 #8 Posted September 16, 2010 you'll get used to it...and besides, if you follow the indicated the speed...you get to "think" your flying when youre really just doing the speed limit! That'll keep the blue and red lights from lighting up behind you! BTW...I also just use my GPS when i really want to know how fast im going. Welcome to the club! Good choice in a bike..you'll enjoy it for years to come!
Dave77459 Posted September 16, 2010 #9 Posted September 16, 2010 I too use a GPS. The only problem I have with the speed-o being off is that I cannot set the cruise control high enough for West Texas where the limit is 80mph. I've thought about the SpeedoHealer (linky goodness) but when you increase the speed-o, you decrease the odometer (so I've heard). My odo is off now, but less than the speed-o is off. I suppose I can split the difference.... The inaccurate speed-o hasn't changed my love of the bike. It's not like I ride the speed limit anyways. Ride it like you stole it, and happily, the speed-o will let you think you are flying down the road while you are actually legal. Welcome to the site. I hope you pay and stick around. Dave
BradT Posted September 17, 2010 #10 Posted September 17, 2010 I cannot set the cruise control high enough for West Texas where the limit is 80mph. Welcome to the site. Hardly ever see the speedometer anymore. I look at the GPS for my speed. The odometer is only off about 2% but again it really doesn't matter. My Cruise trips out when I hit 132 km (82.5 mph) measured on the GPS. Brad
Venturous Randy Posted September 17, 2010 #11 Posted September 17, 2010 Since this is in the 1st gen area, for these bikes you can tweak in the speedo if it is off. I did mine and it is real close with the GPS saying 71 and my bike saying 70. That's close enough for me. RandyA
22lyons Posted September 17, 2010 Author #12 Posted September 17, 2010 Thanks guys. It does bother me. I may try the speedhealer. Is it easy to install? My assumption is that my 2000 is considered a second gen bike? Thanks
Yammer Dan Posted September 18, 2010 #13 Posted September 18, 2010 83 to 93 are 1st Gens. 99 to now are 2nd Gens. WELCOME!! And I didn't say a word about.....
