Mike the stator is an easy change all you need is the stator cover gasket and the middle gear gasket. It would help the removal of the stator screws to have an impact driver but it is not really needed. Also use Yamabond 4 or 7 on the wires and black rubber feedthrough. the stator job start to finish should only take you 1 hour.

R/R of a stator is pretty simple and doesn't require one to be a master wrench. I've done several for various reasons and haven't run into any problems yet. A common problem that one may encounter is a faulty seal at the point where the stator/pickup coil wires run through the side cover. Pay particular attention to this area when reassembling. Should be a pretty much straight forward project; maybe two to three hours.

Good luck

I replaced the stator on my bike this spring and ran into problems putting it back together. After referring to the tech section here for the specific problem I was having, it almost fell together. When putting the side cover back on the bike be sure to put the bell crank portion of the shift linkage on top of the pivot point and not the bottom like it naturally wants to do.

http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8082&highlight=shift+linkage

Also read up on how to seal the wires that come through the side case. My new wires are of a smaller diameter that stock so if you don't seal them well enough, you will have an oil leak. I didn't do a good enough job on mine and have to redo the seal.

Good luck,

someone somewhere in here mentioned that when you put the stator cover back on, the magnetic forces might give you a problem and to get around this, find a couple longer bolts of the same thread. Cut the heads off and finger thread them in. Use as a guide for slipping the cover on straight.

I changed my cover , that darn shifter got me twice , that was the only hard part . stealer did not have a gasket in stock but he cut me one in 5 mins. if your dealer do not have one ask him to cut one for some reason i had to ask him to cut it , he could not offer it to me ???

I have done mine twice.

I put some pix up at http://www.orbitonline.ca/~bjh/Rmstator/ so you can see what the job is like. The tricky part is keeping the starter motor gears in place or putting them back in if they fall out. Not complex but a bit frightening when they fall out on the floor.

I don't know about the Buckeye one you mention but my experience with an ElectroSport after market "high output" one was that it lasted exactly a month. Mid May to mid June of this year. Then I was limping along again and just barely made it home from work.

Fortunately I had a used OEM one I bought on ebay for $15 c/w cover, which I put in to get me going again. That was fortunate as it took ElectroSport most of the rest of the season to follow through on their warranty replacement. I never installed the E/S replacement one as I can't trust it. It is for sale if anyone is interested BTW still in its factory packaging.

The used OEM stator is still in place and working perfectly, without it I would have been out of action most of the season. Also, E/S don't seem to have the concept of "drop in replacement" figured out completely as there was some wire re routing and cable clamp modifications required to get the E/S one to fit in with the mounting holes lined up with the screw holes in the cover. There was nothing in the docs about this before hand, I had to call support to get the instructions and a dispensation from warranty violation in order to do this. A bit disappointing I thought.

If ever I have to do this again, it;ll be OEM for me.

Hope this is helpful,

We have several units on the road for the 1St.Gen and all have been doing well no issues.

It's not a perfect world and man is not perfect and from time to time things we make won't be perfect. Only thing we can do is our best!

Rick, do you make them or get them from somebody else?

It is made for BP to BP specs. I have used their services for the past 5 years now. No it is not Electrosport or what ever that place is on the west coast.

By the way I believe the Electrosport stators are made in England if I'm not mistaken. Of course I have been accused of CRS......

Hey Mike,

A half inch drive impack is a big help pulling the harmonic but like the Gunney said not a bad job. I went through my starter drive on my 89 VR ran into a problem getting the cover back on. The shfting linkage rod turn buckle flipped up side down took a while to noodle that one out but worked out fine. Good luck, BigMax
