mbrannon64 Posted September 15, 2010 #1 Posted September 15, 2010 Hello Everyone, Just got my 1983 yamaha Venture last night. the bike is Very clean I will post pics soon. The Issue I need help with is the Sony radio the power is on it searches switches to all the modes but no sound. the first time I turned it on I heard the little pop on sound through the speakers but now I don't even here that . the guy I got it off of siad it worked but he never used it. it's almost like it muted but it doesn't show that on the screen. there is a scan button on the laft handle bar and it also seams to work but I don't see anything about a mute on it either. no static no sound any thoughts anyone??? Thanks Mike
Wizard765 Posted September 15, 2010 #2 Posted September 15, 2010 Do you have headsets? There is a button on the part of the radio for the intercom and it switches between the headsets and the speakers. If you have that button pushed you will get no sound out of the speakers.
mbrannon64 Posted September 15, 2010 Author #3 Posted September 15, 2010 No I don't have headsets. and the buttons are pretty basic. I don't see anything for headsets fast forward &rewind am/fm 1 2 /dir and just the knob buttons bass /balance I guess maybe I need to find a cassette and try that tomorrow
Marcarl Posted September 15, 2010 #4 Posted September 15, 2010 I'm thinking you might have an aftermarket radio.
friesman Posted September 15, 2010 #5 Posted September 15, 2010 me too, I dont recall ever seeing a Sony as an OEM radio. Brian
Dano Posted September 15, 2010 #6 Posted September 15, 2010 Do a google search on the brand and model number, see what that brings up.
skydoc_17 Posted September 15, 2010 #7 Posted September 15, 2010 Hey Mike, Without pics, we are shooting in the dark here, but here goes. If the left side panel has a lock in the upper left side on the panel, use the ignition key to remove the panel. This will expose the wiring and the back of the radio unit. If there is no lock, then remove the allen head screws holding the panel to expose the wiring. Check to be sure that the wires are not just twisted together or not connected at all. If this is not the problem and it were me, I would disconnect the speaker wires and connect a known good speaker to the speaker wires on the radio unit. If the radio is good, then check the wiring to the speakers and the speakers themselves. If the radio unit is bad, then measure the outside dimentions of the radio and purchase a new one. Perhaps one that will accept a CD or an even better unit with an IPOD connection. Keep us posted on the results and don't be afraid to ask more questions, by the way, welcome to the VR.ORG site. Earl
mbrannon64 Posted September 15, 2010 Author #8 Posted September 15, 2010 Thanks for the input Fellas I'm going to dig into it tonight. I have already been looking at some replacement units Agian Thanks Mike
dingy Posted September 15, 2010 #9 Posted September 15, 2010 Mike, First picture is of a stock radio setup. Second picture is of an aftermarket unit that I added, using the panel from the stock unit. This radio is from Wal-Mart. Cost $40. It has a plug in for a USB thumb drive and another for an SD memory chip. No CD built in, so it is not as deep as a radio with a CB. I had a unit with a CD player in it, but it had skipping problems due to vibration & mounting position. Gary
Dano Posted September 15, 2010 #10 Posted September 15, 2010 Gary, what do you do about being caught in the rain? Is the unit weatherproof?
dingy Posted September 15, 2010 #11 Posted September 15, 2010 (edited) Gary, what do you do about being caught in the rain? Is the unit weatherproof? I have a cover that I made from a tupperware container bottom that hooks under the two metal pull handles. Not real pretty, but functional. There are also marine grade covers that are available on ebay. These hinge up. Gary Edited September 15, 2010 by dingy added marine cover line
mbrannon64 Posted September 17, 2010 Author #12 Posted September 17, 2010 Well got her Working. thought it was strange that everything cycled through on the radio and no sound. so I pulled the left turn signal out and spliced into the speaker wire with what I knew was a working speaker and MUSIC. so now I need help with where to get replacements and any hints or photos on removing the old ones Thanks Mike
dingy Posted September 17, 2010 #13 Posted September 17, 2010 I used a set from Wal-Mart. 4", 3 way waterproof. About $25. They will bolt directly in. You need to remove both fairing pockets covers to replace. Remove tank cover and then about 10 screws each side. Gary
