Guest Tinman Posted September 14, 2010 #1 Posted September 14, 2010 I think I've found my new (to me) RSV - its raspberry and champagne colors are beautiful, the frame is straight, the electronics all seem to work, and the finish is in perfect shape. It has Avon tires that I will double check for cracks, and a totaled rear shock. I will not accept the bike from the dealer as is, but is there something better than a Yamaha shock? Is there a major price difference? Should I insist on the aftermarket item, or is it just as good as the stock one. Anybody??????????
Guest Tinman Posted September 15, 2010 #2 Posted September 15, 2010 Got a photo of the RSV I'm after.
wes0778 Posted September 15, 2010 #4 Posted September 15, 2010 What year is it? :sign yeah that: if less than 5 years old it'll be warranty.
YamaDuck Posted September 15, 2010 #5 Posted September 15, 2010 Looks like a 2003 to me but could have after market paint. There are only two shocks that I am aware of for this bike. The stock shock and a Progressive shock. I have never owned a Progressive shock but from what I can tell the Progressive is more expensive but is rebuildable. I don't know how long it goes between rebuilds or how much it cost to rebuild it. The progressive is also not an air shock but I do think the ride is adjustable manually.

Guest Tinman Posted September 15, 2010 #8 Posted September 15, 2010 It's a 2003 with about 55,000 miles on it, original paint, and very well kept except for the shock. Thanks for the info. Which would you have the dealer install. If there is a price difference, is it worth it for me to pay the extra for the aftermarket shock?
Carbon_One Posted September 15, 2010 #9 Posted September 15, 2010 I'd go with the Works shock and never look back. The extra expense would be worth it IMO. The shock is very easy to change as well so depending on what a dealer wants to do the job you could save big $$$ doing it yourself. Maybe convince the dealer to give ya a big discount off the price of the bike & use that towards the shocks replacement costs. Larry

If your pretty sure that you'll own the bike at least 3 or 4 years, I'd 'spring' for the Works Unit. But there might be a 4-6 week delivery time on it..from what I have read here, it takes about that long to get one. If you think the bike will only be under your butt for less than 3 years ( around 15-30,000 miles) or so, then the Yamaha unit will probably last that long. It may still take a week or two to get the Yamaha shock. One other thought. The stock shock is air assist, which means it can handle a variety of loads, by adding or releasing air. The Works unit requires you to provide your approximate weight, and whether or not you will have a heavy passenger most of the time, or running predominately solo. They will provide the proper spring rate, based on your info. Think of the shock as a 'wear' item, once the bike is out of warranty. And plan accordingly.

Not knowing how long it last before a rebuild and the cost to rebuild a Works Performance it's all a matter of how you use the bike. If you are planning on pulling a trailer and occasional two up riding I would probably stick with the stock shock. If you do not need to make many ride adjustments once it's set up then maybe the Works Performance. The original shock is an air shock so it is easily adjusted for different load situations. However the stock shock is far from ideal I'm om my second one now. Maybe someone with a Works Performance shock will chime in and let us know the good and bad points about the Works Performance shock. I think the custom make them for your specific needs.
Carbon_One Posted September 15, 2010 #12 Posted September 15, 2010 : Maybe someone with a Works Performance shock will chime in and let us know the good and bad points about the Works Performance shock. I think the custom make them for your specific needs. My factory shock went south just before I decided to trike it and after weighing all the facts I went with the Works. Due to the trike weighing an additional 400 lbs I asked them to beef one up over what they normally set one up for the Ventures. I mostly ride two up so had them add in that fact and the additional weight to build mine. After a couple of trial runs setting the preload as well as tweaking the air bags under the trikes body I'm pretty pleaed with the ride now. Since getting it squared away I've put about 12k on it with out doing nothing more then adjusting the air bag pressure for what load I have on it at the time. One up, two up, loaded for a trip, etc. Even then I rarely change more then a 2-3 lbs in the air bags so that means the Works shock is still doing the majority of the grunt work. Larry
RandyR Posted September 15, 2010 #13 Posted September 15, 2010 Take a look at this thread, particularly the posts by Rick Butler and the attachment about the aftermarket shock. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52329&page=2
