Rockdoc Posted September 7, 2010 #1 Posted September 7, 2010 I'm sure this info is buried in the tech section, but does anyone have an answer for the night ride glare I get off my 2nd gen venture screen? Surely there must be a film of something we can stick/spray on to cut down the glare. In town its almost impossible to ride without me considering chopping down the screen, something I don't want to do as it may affect my pillions ride. Cheers
OB-1 Posted September 7, 2010 #2 Posted September 7, 2010 We replaced our windshield with XXL size from Clearview. This windshield catches the sun reflecting off the gas cap so my wife made a simple cloth cover for the gas cap.
Sleeperhawk Posted September 7, 2010 #3 Posted September 7, 2010 Did the same, went with a Clearview Tinted and no more glare. OEM shields are really bad about night time glare.
KarlS Posted September 7, 2010 #4 Posted September 7, 2010 My . I don't have that problem because. When I get a new to me bike I get a new windscreen and then NEVER use anything on it except for water and lint free scratch free towels. Seems to me when ever people start spraying and using chemicals on the windscreen the glare problem starts. Just what works for me.
fixit3546 Posted September 8, 2010 #5 Posted September 8, 2010 Throwing this in for kicks, Lemon pledge is a pretty good polish for the wind screen. it does help with the glare. Probably do need a new one. even very fine scratches make one virtually useless at night. ic23b's comments are good, all i would add is don't wipe in circular motions. up and down motions don't put the swirls in the plastic that cause much of the glare. oh yea, one more..........NEVER USE THE SQUEEGEE AT THE SERVICE STATION, UNLESS YOU WANT TO BUY A NEW SHIELD............(don't ask.)
Venturous Randy Posted September 8, 2010 #6 Posted September 8, 2010 Much of the glare is caused by small scratches. When I got my bike 14 years ago, I could barely ride it at night. I ended up sanding the windshield down, starting with 2000 grit sandpaper and then used steps of polishing compound until it is about as good as new. Then I started using Plexus and it also has a fine polishing agent. Even now, if I wash my bike and the windshield, if I don't put Plexus on it, at night I will notice more glare. Have you ever used Plexus on your windshield? One other note on Plexus, it matters what type cloth you use as a soft cotton cloth works best. Cloths with rayon/nylon fibers don't work good, and NEVER use a paper towel on your windshield. RandyA
Rockdoc Posted September 8, 2010 Author #7 Posted September 8, 2010 Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I'm going to try the polish route rather than a replacement screen as its very pricey here in the UK. But thanks for all the tips.
Rick Haywood Posted September 8, 2010 #8 Posted September 8, 2010 I use turtle wax ICE detailer on everything on my bike including the windshield and it works great
