Trailer hitch project for this winter

Since I have been unable to find a receiver hitch for my 1st gen MKII, I decided that I will make one this winter.

 

I have a Markland hitch that I acquired off of eBay and I will use the two front tubes from that for attachment to the bike.

 

I have designed a new part to replace the big chrome platform that Markland uses. Once I have this done and am sure that I will not need any dimensions off of the chrome ball mount, then it will be up for sale.

 

Here are the cad drawings for the receiver to replace the stock Chrome ball mount.

 

I still have some dimensions to finalize but this is the jest of what it will look like.

 

Great design Jeff. I wished I could do that. I did my drawings in paint, the best I could. Worked alright, but your drawings are great. You could probably sell a few of those from what I been hearing.

 

What is the measurement from the rear of the hitch to the 1/2" pin hole ?

 

Just wondering because my stinger mount is 2 1/2" to center of pin hole to the rear of the stinger. I may change from 2 1/2" to 2" to the center of the pin hole from rear of stinger.

I checked a bunch of class I hitches at a local store.

They were all a 5 inch long receiver tube with the hole at 2.50 inches from both ends.

So I followed the lead so that anything from a store should fit.

I appreciate that. I was beginning to wonder that I had made a bad decision when drilling my stingers at 2.50 from the rear. I have several made up and did not want to have to re-drill the boogers, especially after already painting them all. Oh ya, have you decided to build up some and sell them Jeff ? Just wondering.... Had a few question me about the reese style for their 1st gen. The price of steel has went way up, even in bulk 21 and 24 foot pieces. Schedule 40 pipe is really high.

If I do decide to go commercial making these then I may have to come up with a complete system. what I have now requires the front tubes from a Markland hitch. I have no clue if this will work on a MK I.

Maybe at Dons MD I can get a good look at a MK I with a Markland hitch to see if it would use the same receiver or not.

 

More likely is that I will do one here and there as conversions.

I am fortunate to have equipped a pretty decent man cave over the years.

I have it figured that I should be able to retire on my 106th birthday and may need to supplement my income at that time.

 

 

 

Until I get the first one built, I have no idea what I will have into it as far as time or materials. All of the materials would be much more cost effective in bigger quantities. Maybe I'll look into the cost difference to make a couple or three vs the one that I was going to do. I was estimating around $50 in just material to do just one.

 

Hmmmm...... This may be a good excuse to go shopping at the tooy,,,, I mean tool store for a nice 8" bench grinder with a coarse wheel and a 20 ton press If I have any intention of trying to make a bunch of these.

 

It really needs no jigs other than a flat table to work on, I try to always design things to be self jigging, the production guys at work kind of like that.

I got a guy down here in Atlanta that is good with that sort of thing. Setting up jigs for mass production of custom parts and assemblies. If you want to work on your retirement.

But I don't want to move to Atlanta, and I design things so they do not need jigs or fixtures.

Especially if I'm the one that has to build it.
