a1bummer Posted September 1, 2010 #1 Posted September 1, 2010 What do you suppose a 1985 Yamaha Maxim 750 in good condition, with 16000 plus miles on it would sell for? A coworker has one that he is selling. He's hoping to get $1000 for it. He's had it for 12 years and has taken real good care of it. Always has been garaged. What do you guys think would be a fair price? Thanks, Bill
etcswjoe Posted September 1, 2010 #2 Posted September 1, 2010 That seems like a fair price, I was looking for one a couple months ago and all the ones in decent shape were more than a grand.
flb_78 Posted September 1, 2010 #3 Posted September 1, 2010 He's probably not asking enough. If it's in rideable condition as is and the paint and seat are clean, it's probably worth closer to 2,000.
Squidley Posted September 1, 2010 #4 Posted September 1, 2010 Thats sounds about right, it's only a 750 and it's 25 years old
MiCarl Posted September 1, 2010 #5 Posted September 1, 2010 In 85 the Maxim was only available in the U.S. in 700 cc models. Is this a Canadian bike or is the year wrong? The 85 XJ700 Maxim was air cooled. There was also a water cooled version, the XJ700 Maxim X. Two years ago I sold a very good 82 Maxim 650 for $1300. Took me a long time to get it. I'd say 1,000 - 1,200 for a 700 Maxim. Add 2-300 for a Maxim X. If he can dig in and wait for the right buyer he might get a bit more.
a1bummer Posted September 1, 2010 Author #6 Posted September 1, 2010 (edited) Whoops! My bad! It's an 87. NOPE! I'm still wrong. His note says its an 85. I'll just have to go take a look at it for myself. LOL! Edited September 1, 2010 by a1bummer
a1bummer Posted September 2, 2010 Author #7 Posted September 2, 2010 Ok! We went to take a look at the bike and take it for a ride. It's an 86 Yamaha Maxim XJ700. We bought it and brought it home. Now we're both going to sign up for one of those cycle courses. I'll have pictures for ya later. Bill
MiCarl Posted September 2, 2010 #8 Posted September 2, 2010 Didn't realize you were thinking about bringing it home........ The internet community for them is at xjbikes.com. In particular, there is a guy there that specializes in new and used parts for them.
a1bummer Posted September 2, 2010 Author #9 Posted September 2, 2010 Thanks, I was looking for that kind of stuff on the net last night. But I got tired and went to bed before I found anything good. Bill
eagleeye Posted September 2, 2010 #10 Posted September 2, 2010 Hey Bill, Congrats on getting the bike. Before I saw that you bought it, I was going to say that it's Sept and prices should/are going down every day here. Be sure to sign up for one of the wisconsin technical school motorcycle courses. Good course and good price. There should be one near you. Steve
massey130 Posted September 2, 2010 #11 Posted September 2, 2010 when you get it shined up, I would like to see some pics of the new 2 U scooter.
a1bummer Posted September 2, 2010 Author #12 Posted September 2, 2010 Here are some pics of the better halves new scooter. Her birthday is next wee so we're calling it her b-day present. Now she needs to go through one of those rider courses you guys mention. It helps that she used to ride her brothers dirt bike when she was younger. I'll be taking it with her as well. It'll bring down my insurance %10. Plus we'll see what kind of bad habits I've learned over the years. I,m pretty sure I learn something new too. Probably something so obvious that it never crossed my mind. Then she won't have to partner up with a stranger either. Bill
massey130 Posted September 2, 2010 #13 Posted September 2, 2010 how nice is that !!! the paint looks new from the photos. the seat is super nice looking. rims and rotors look superb. that is a great buy. good on ya.
RandyR Posted September 2, 2010 #14 Posted September 2, 2010 Yes. You did good to grab that one, it would appear. Hopefully the mechanicals are reliable for you.
cecdoo Posted September 2, 2010 #15 Posted September 2, 2010 If you got that for a grand you stole it:thumbsup: they are great little bikes and they run great too. The maxim X was a fast 700, never rode the xj700. That bike will last you a long time. Craig
hig4s Posted September 3, 2010 #16 Posted September 3, 2010 I had an 82 750 Seca, basically the same engine, I recommend you put an oil cooler on it.. Really slows down the need for valve adjustments, not that they needed it that often to start with.
YamaDuck Posted September 3, 2010 #17 Posted September 3, 2010 You got a good deal. We bought my son an 1982 Maxim 750 as a beginners bike. Great bike but big mistake. That thing will fly. It weighs next to nothing and Yamaha says it has 82 hp. If it is running right it will blow the doors off a Venture.
a1bummer Posted September 3, 2010 Author #18 Posted September 3, 2010 Thanks for the kudos. I plan on adding some bags and a highway bar to it for my better half. I'm gonna have to take her out and get her a better helmet and some other gear later. So how do you tell if it's an "XJ" or an "X"? I'm just assuming it is an XJ. I haven't found a lot of information so far on the net yet that tells me for sure what the difference is. There's nothing on the side covers like most bikes to indicate what it is. Here's a pic of the VIN sticker on the frame. There is an X all by itself in the middle of the VIN number, which leads me to think it may be the X. I just don't know! Bill Well I see now, according to http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vinDecoder.asp, it's an XJ700
krome rose Posted September 3, 2010 #19 Posted September 3, 2010 Woman's viewpoint here... omg, it's cute as a button and red, my favorite color.http://i824.photobucket.com/albums/zz162/SunnyblueVR/smiles/ladybike.gif Seriously, it is a sweet looking ride and a great price. Perfect size for a new rider to handle. You made a great decision. Congratulations to you both! Have fun riding together! Brandy

Bill Well I see now, according to http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vinDecoder.asp, it's an XJ700 The Maxim X was water cooled, If I remember rite it had 5 valves per cyl. it was the more expensive model, I dont think yours is the Maxim X, I dont see the radiator. My buddy had one and we raced and swapped all the time, that was 25 yrs ago. I am sure a Maxim guy would be able to tell ya more. I always liked those bikes, had an 82 650maxim. Craig
Yammer Dan Posted September 3, 2010 #21 Posted September 3, 2010 I have a 82 Maxium 750 a few of you have seen. That little bike will run. You made a good deal. She will enjoy it they handle Great.
MiCarl Posted September 3, 2010 #22 Posted September 3, 2010 As cecdoo stated - it's not water cooled so it's not an X. I'm not sure motoverse will distinguish as they're both XJ700s The model (if it's an 86) will be XJ700S.
