Guest Popeye Posted October 30, 2007 #1 Posted October 30, 2007 I POSTED EARLIER ABOUT MY 86 VR RUNNING ON 3 CYLS AFTER TOWED TO SHOP WITH A BROKEN THROTTLE CABLE. CABLE FIXED, BUT THEN, SHOP SAID SCOOT ON 3 CYLS. [iT WAS RUNNING PERFECT WHEN CABLE BROKE. SCOOT LOST LF CYL WHILE IN SHOP] I PICKED IT UP, RODE IT MYSELF [to see for myself...60 miles] TO MY REGULAR SHOP & IT WAS DEFINATELY ON 3 CYLS. IT TOOK 'EM A WEEK TO GET TO IT, BUT THE TECHS SAY IT RUNS PERFECT & ON ALL 4 CYLS ??????????????????? THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO IT, EXCEPT TEST 4 GOOD CYLINDERS. THEY TESTED E/THING POSSIBLE, BUT ALL CHECKS OUT FINE. My thought is intermittent electrical problem, but if that's the case, I can't ride it anywhere with any peace of mind PLUS NO WAY TO TRACK DOWN PROBLEM. Any ideas that don't require dynamite?
muffinman Posted October 30, 2007 #2 Posted October 30, 2007 Popeye I would suspect the TCI clean the connectors and give it a few days of test rides. Jeff
PEIslander Posted October 30, 2007 #3 Posted October 30, 2007 You should also replace the plug wires and caps if they are more than a few years old. They can break down intermittantly and prevent enough spark at the plug.
Orrin Posted October 30, 2007 #4 Posted October 30, 2007 Electrical components as they age generally work better when cold. Get her good and hot (boy, there is an idea) and see how it runs. if you have a failing part it should show up then.
Cutty Posted October 31, 2007 #5 Posted October 31, 2007 Check to see which plug isn't firing, maybe tech didn't start it with your proceedure and fouled plug while testing cable replacement. My 87 gets a little finicky about starting up sometimes and will foul plug.
Guest Yamahawg Posted October 31, 2007 #6 Posted October 31, 2007 Any Chance they could have knocked a plug wire loose when they worked on it ? I would check/see if both ends of the wires are seated good.
Guest Popeye Posted October 31, 2007 #7 Posted October 31, 2007 During the ride from one shop to the other, on 3 cyls, the tach kept falling to zero for several minutes at a time??? It lost the LF cyl while in one shop [throttle cable replaced] and fixed itself while waiting at the other shop. Fuel has been drained & flushed through system...even though carbs have been totally redone this year with tune-up, sync, etc. Since weather is getting a bit chilly, I will probably just replace wires/caps & solder-up the TCI. Seems like a whole lot of work & it will take what little spare time I have to do it.
Thom Posted October 31, 2007 #8 Posted October 31, 2007 most likely tci like muffin said , i have had the same problem i baked my tci and cleaned the 2 plugs , if not done already move the tci to the top of the air box , that will make it easier next time .
Guest Popeye Posted October 31, 2007 #9 Posted October 31, 2007 most likely tci like muffin said , i have had the same problem i baked my tci and cleaned the 2 plugs , if not done already move the tci to the top of the air box , that will make it easier next time . I've been trying to ignore this TCI bake as I've heard it's a real drag to get to. Then recipe is 150*F in pre-heated oven for 20 mins.? It's only baked at 50* above body temp?, doesn't seem like much heat. Don't want to melt it, though, I've heard what they cost. Bake is just to remove moisture? P.S. What is this "next time" business?
SilvrT Posted October 31, 2007 #10 Posted October 31, 2007 Get her good and hot (boy, there is an idea) . :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:
muffinman Posted October 31, 2007 #11 Posted October 31, 2007 P.S. What is this "next time" business? I have been told that eventually you will need to dry it out again.I loose 1 cyl in the heavy rain at speeds under 65mph but have not looked into re sealing my tci.I Just live with it although it is on my list of things to do eventually because if it still runs it aint broke.
