Mariner Fan Posted October 30, 2007 #1 Posted October 30, 2007 I want to remove the warning decal off my gas tank. Looks like it's really on there. Anyone have a good suggestion on how to get it off without scratching the paint job? Thanks, Bob
Pilot Posted October 30, 2007 #2 Posted October 30, 2007 WD-40 will remove it, you can also use Goo Be Gone, but I have found the WD to work faster, just spray it on a rag lay the rag on the decal spray some more on the rag (soak it) let it sit a few minutes and the decal should peel off. Repeat directions if as necassary. Clean the area with soap and water when your finished.
KingSizer Posted October 30, 2007 #3 Posted October 30, 2007 I asked on this board before how to remove a car dealerships name decal off the back of my truck before and several people said use heat, like a hair dryer, or use wd40 and let it soak into the decal. I tried both with limited success. Now the decals about half peeled off. Good Luck...
royalstarjac Posted October 30, 2007 #4 Posted October 30, 2007 I used a hair dryer to soften the glue and peeled it off. Then cleaned the residue with WD-40. No problem.-Jack
Freebird Posted October 30, 2007 #5 Posted October 30, 2007 I keep hearing about solvents and removers and etc. but to be honest, I've found that when you wet any of these stickers it just makes a mess. I simply used a razor blade to gently lift one of the corners and just slowly pealed it off. It left no residue and came off clean and in one piece. Maybe I just got lucky.
KiteSquid Posted October 30, 2007 #6 Posted October 30, 2007 I pealed mine off, and used a little goo gone to remove any residue....
firewalker Posted October 30, 2007 #7 Posted October 30, 2007 another way is a little heat and use strong fishing line or dental floss and slide behind it, I know several people that use this method for removing from cars, I am leaving my decals so I have never tested it but have seen the results, just have to use WD to finish off the glue......
pegscraper Posted October 30, 2007 #8 Posted October 30, 2007 Most hair dryers anymore don't get hot enough to do the job. It takes a heat gun to do it. There is a wide window between softening adhesive and stripping paint; nothing to worry about there. Then use the light solvents like mineral spirits to clean off the remaining adhesive.
KiteSquid Posted October 30, 2007 #9 Posted October 30, 2007 BTW, I would not recomed heating a fuel tank....
yamahamer Posted October 30, 2007 #10 Posted October 30, 2007 I USE A HAIR DRYER UNTIL THE DECAL BUBBLES THEN PEAL IT OFF THEN ZIPO LIGHTER FLUID FOR RESIDUE. HAVE DONE MANY THIS WAY WITH NO PROBLEMS.
Tartan Terror Posted October 30, 2007 #11 Posted October 30, 2007 I use plastic razor blades so not to gouge the paint or fiberglass. Use a little heat and remove the glue with 3m adhesive remover. comes in a spray can. Use it on the truck, bike and Boat and never damaged anything.

fideous Posted October 30, 2007 #15 Posted October 30, 2007 I've used a heat gun then contact cleaner for film removal. A little quicker than a hairdryer and have never tarnished any paint.Ride Safe.
High Plains Drifter Posted October 30, 2007 #16 Posted October 30, 2007 Heat gun, plastic razor blade, and acetone worked for me. Wash with mild detergent and wax. Drifter
