ti-lou Posted August 24, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2010 At around 60 mph I hear whisling since a week and I didn't do anything on my bike. Some of my friends dont want to buy a RSV for this reaon. Apparently the Yamaha's engineer are not able to find the cause of this agressive noise (whistling). If one of you found the cause let me know. Louis

bikenut Posted August 25, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 25, 2010 Ya bet it is the cluch basket. When you go down the road and you hear this noise let off gas and pull in the clutch and see if it goes away. If so it is the basket making the noise.:puzzled:

painterman67 Posted August 25, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 25, 2010 I thought the only whistleing sound a 2nd gen heard was the sound of a 1st gen pulling by and away. sorry just had to go there david

Yamaman Posted August 25, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 25, 2010 Ventures whine, Kawasakis whine,Harleys rattle and bang, don't sweat it,ride and enjoy. Correction... YAMAHAS whine, or whistle. My 650 Maxim is worse than my RSV. It's a motorcycle. You want quiet, buy a Cadillac.
bobbyduck Posted August 25, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 25, 2010 Sounds like mine before I browbeat Yamaha Canada into putting in an "I" code clutch basket. If it is clutch basket, it will go away when you pull in the clutch lever..... There are many threads on here that have been used to convince reluctant dealers... Good Luck! bobbyduck Posted August 25, 2010 Share #11 Posted August 25, 2010 Second half of reply - I would just ignore those on here who belittle the idea of fixing the clutch basket chirp (aka whistle). I did. They can ride theirs and I will tend to mine... You shouldn't be stuck with a premium bike that sounds like a freaking police car!
eazyduzzit Posted August 25, 2010 Share #12 Posted August 25, 2010 You shouldn't be stuck with a premium bike that sounds like a freaking police car! I agree Bobby. I like to relax and enjoy riding. I rode one RSTD that sounded like the Jetson's car. I passed on buying it for that reason.
rlyons Posted August 26, 2010 Share #13 Posted August 26, 2010 Sometimes changing the clutch basket will stop the whine, sometimes not, sometimes it goes away for a while and then returns. If it is so bad you can't live with it then spend the money and try to stop it. If not then just ride it and enjoy,it will never hurt a thing. My Harley had the exact same whine when I changed out the cam,it is the clearance between the two gears, too loose and it will rattle, too tight and it will scream. If you get lucky and get the right clearance on the new gear then you will have a quiet engine, if not you have wasted your money. Mine has some whine, it does not bother me so I ride and enjoy it. Anyone who disagrees and can't live with there's then by all means try to stop it. The point I am making is that all bikes make noise and it is a personal choice if you try to stop it or not. Goat Roper Posted September 25, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 25, 2010 Thank you for this thread! Just picked mine up yesterday then left for a 500 mile trip and at low RPMs I was like "what in the hell is whistling?"
CalhounWV Posted September 25, 2010 Share #15 Posted September 25, 2010 I came from riding V-twins to the RSTD V4... it took me awhile to get used to running it at higher RPM's. After that mine quite whinning.
jfoster Posted September 25, 2010 Share #16 Posted September 25, 2010 I would look for any missing bolts...the empty cavity could be the culprit.
