b2dad Posted August 21, 2010 #1 Posted August 21, 2010 Today was the first day of our 10 day vacation...up at 4 am, promising Don I would be ready and out the door by 5...well I was! Unfortunately, the bike decided it didn't want to leave that early... Don had started the bike, pulled it out of the garage with trailer attached and was letting it warm up in the driveway when all of a sudden smoke started billowing out. He starts bending down to see what is causing the smoke when we see oil pouring out the bottom of the bike. Couldn't see exactly where it was coming from because of the running boards on the trike. I begin hollering to turn the bike off cause it's smoking and blowing oil....Don has a flashlight trying to see where the oil is coming from...CHAOS! We end up unloading the gear out of the bike and put it on the trailer to haul to our mechanic / dealer when he opens at 8. Playing the "waiting game" really bites. Don calls our mechanic (his number is on his speed dial) and tells him the problem. Woody promptly thinks it's a joke because Don is being so calm about it!! We are there before they open and Woody finds the problem right off...the oil line to the new gauges has busted open. I think this is the second time. To get us on the road, Woody puts a plug in it and we don't have an oil gauge now. End of story? NOT!! Now we have to go back home (about 30 mile trip) to get the trailer and hook it up again and reload the bike...head back the way we just come...and now his MP3 player quits. Stop at Radio Shack and they trade us for a new one...AGAIN...(this is #3). On the road again...trying to get to Gatlinburg, TN for 2 nights. Stop for lunch and guess how much it comes to? $13.13! LOL! Lucky number right? We finally make it to our hotel...hot and tired. We hit two traffic jams and that is the nice thing about a trike...you don't have to balance it waiting on traffic to move. It was at least 95 out there today, actual temp. but you know what? We MADE IT!! That is twice now that the bike has "quit" working...the morning of a trip...right at home. The last time, just a few weeks ago, it was the fuel pump. Beats having something wrong AFTER you leave home and are on the road, right? Hope y'all have a great day tomorrow. We are!
mrich12000 Posted August 21, 2010 #2 Posted August 21, 2010 nice thing about a trike...you don't have to balance. Have a safe and great trip, Pictures please!!
oldgoat Posted August 21, 2010 #3 Posted August 21, 2010 $13.13? well did you travel 666 miles to get there? have a safe trip

Marcarl Posted August 21, 2010 #5 Posted August 21, 2010 Well if you are coming through Ontario, stop by to say HI. Enjoy your trip.
Yammer Dan Posted August 21, 2010 #6 Posted August 21, 2010 Hoping thats the last of the bad things for your vacation.
BuckShot Posted August 21, 2010 #7 Posted August 21, 2010 What--No pictures of the chaos? How many neighbors did you wake up with all the yelling? Seriously--glad everything worked out fine. Hope you both have a great trip.
Carbon_One Posted August 21, 2010 #8 Posted August 21, 2010 WOW. That's certainly no way to start your day let alone a trip. The only good thing was it happened at home and you were able to fix the problem thou temporarly. Hope the rest of your trip goes smoothly. Larry
Gary N. Posted August 21, 2010 #9 Posted August 21, 2010 Glad you didn't damage the engine. I hate those cheap plastic oil lines that come with those gauge sets. Braided stainless steel line is the only safe way to go in that hot environment. Or switch to an electric sending unit and gauge. At least if you burn a wire off you won't wreck the engine.
LilBeaver Posted August 21, 2010 #10 Posted August 21, 2010 Yikes. I certainly feel your pain but also share the thankfulness of it happening BEFORE you get away from home. Glad it was nothing serious, hope the rest of your trip only has the events in it that YOU TWO WANT!!
Guest scarylarry Posted August 21, 2010 #11 Posted August 21, 2010 I was all over your tail I left the boro at 9 am and been here since 1 pm. midnite Posted August 22, 2010 #12 Posted August 22, 2010 Sorry to hear about bad start. Hope rest of trip is better. Bike didn't want to leave without the rest of us.
Monty Posted August 22, 2010 #13 Posted August 22, 2010 Well, that stinks. I wonder what happened? The line must've gotten damaged while working on or washing the bike. Yours is the only one I've heard of having a problem with the line. I'll look at it when you get back home, and we'll get it squared away. Enjoy your trip! Wish we were there!.
oldgoat Posted August 22, 2010 #14 Posted August 22, 2010 Hell, Michigan - Town of Hell wow no more post from them they end up here?
Nighthawk II Posted August 22, 2010 #15 Posted August 22, 2010 I've had that to happen on the lines on cars when i've tightened the fittings toooo tight. That was on brass fittings and plastic lines. I was in Pigeon Forge yesterday and passed you twice going in the opposite directions. I was in my truck and the traffic was thick both times so I couldn't get turned around to chase you down.
b2dad Posted August 22, 2010 Author #16 Posted August 22, 2010 Nighthawk II: Sorry we missed you. True the traffic was THICK! You probably couldn't have caught Don no matter what. LOL! He's fast on the trike! Monty: No big deal about the oil line / gauge. Like I said earlier, it was just lucky that we caught it at home and not on the road. We have been extremely lucky on that so far. Made it to Myrtle Beach this afternoon. It rained a little in Gatlinburg as we were leaving this morning. We missed having breakfast with ScaryLarry. After the rain quit, the sun came out and it got very hot out. We ordered pizza delivered to our room here cause it was thundering and the clouds were rolling in...figured it was going to cut loose any second. Oh well...needed to rest up after traveling. Us old folks can't keep going without a break I think. Maybe tomorrow I can put my toes in the ocean...been awhile since I got to do that. Oh yeah..and Don let me start the bike and pull it around to where he was talking with some guys and their bikes at the resort yesterday. Everytime I ask to drive, he says no. Oh well. Maybe I don't really want to drive in all the traffic yet...???? There are some crazy people out there..for sure!
b2dad Posted August 22, 2010 Author #17 Posted August 22, 2010 Our favorite stop...DQ!! Then a view from our balcony... View from the Smoky mountains...
