geep Posted August 19, 2010 #1 Posted August 19, 2010 the item identified as "1. Bolt " lower right hand picture chapter 6 page 8 of the RSTD owners manual does not come out, rather it turns and turns and turns Any suggestions on how to remove this? What is the attachment? a nut? a rubber grommet?
Kregerdoodle Posted August 19, 2010 #2 Posted August 19, 2010 not sure, but think it is one of those that turns 1/2 turn then is loose, if that makes any sense..
ahoutzer Posted August 19, 2010 #3 Posted August 19, 2010 It does not come out (unless you break it). It just turns a quarter or half turn to loosen it.
eazyduzzit Posted August 19, 2010 #4 Posted August 19, 2010 My '05 RSTD must be different. It is an allen bolt and screws into a rubber "wellnut". If it doesn't unscrew then the wellnut must be turning. You might try pulling out a little on it while you turn it. Just enough to cause some friction between the wellnut and the fairing.
geep Posted August 19, 2010 Author #5 Posted August 19, 2010 The head of the bolt sure looks like a regular bolt rather than a quick release fastener, but will give that a try
geep Posted August 19, 2010 Author #6 Posted August 19, 2010 You do NOT need to remove the lower fairings as per the manual to check or change the air filters, a 1/4" socket set with a 6 or 8" extension and a universal joint will work just fine....grrrrrrr! Lesson learned Surprisingly the air filters were very clean
YamaDuck Posted August 19, 2010 #7 Posted August 19, 2010 I wish I could help. I had one of mine do that but I can't remember how I got it out. Seems like I was able to get some long locking pliers and get on the rubber on the backside so it would not turn and then unscrew it from the front. But I really can't remember. There is a way because I did it just not sure how I did it. Dang getting old ain't for youngsters.
