The Son of a very good friend of mine is being transfer from New Jersey to Atlanta and needs to know what areas to start looking for apartments. He's 30 and single and makes good money so doesn't need anything big, but has no Idea what are the better areas in or around Atlanta. I have a web site that gives me a lot of stats for any area but would be faster if I had some idea where to start looking. I don't know yet what part of Atlanta their headquarters are. Any locations would help..Thanks.

Atlanta is a big town with outlying areas that are frequently called "Atlanta" by those that don't live in the city core.

really need to know where he'll be working. cross town commutes can be impossible in traffic. If his office is near a Marta subway stop, then using the Marta could be attractive.

If downtown, there are a number of newly re-furbished condos just east of downtown in old warehouses near GA State Univ. The neighborhood isn't the best though, but its turning around.

I like the Arts Center area between Buckhead and Downtown. There are several high rise condo complexs with restaurants and gyms that are walking distance to lots of Atlanta night life. Its also on the Marta. Its a better geography.

I agree with Randy. It depends on where his job is located. Traffic around here is a nightmare. Studies show the the Atlanta area has the longest commutes time wise in the country.

I only live 15 miles from work and getting home sometimes takes an hour. So the closer he lives to work the better.

If he works in or near downtown (including Midtown or Buckhead), the Midtown/Virginia Highlands area is a great place to start looking. Tons of options for a well healed single guy. My daughter lives down that way near Lindburgh Station and loves it. It's 10 to 15 minutes to anywhere down there.

If he is working anywhere in the 'burbs - Gwennett, north Fulton, Cobb, etc - he needs to position himself so that he lives in a direction that goes against the general flow of the morning and afternoon commutes. It's easy to look at the ATL and see that it's a city with a big X through it (I-75 and I-85), a circle around it (I-285), and a horizontal line cutting right through the middle of it (I-20). Most morning traffic generally flows from all directions toward the perimeter (I-285). There are some exceptions to this (ie: GA-400, the main north/south artery north of Atlanta, which sucks in both directions all hours of the day!), but you get the general idea.

When you can be more specific about where he works, I think we can give you some better suggestions.

Here is the address where his office will be. I see it is a bit South West of Atlanta.

6715 Oakley Industrial Blvd.

Union City, GA 30291

Thanks all.

The options are endless down that way. My only suggestion for him would be to stay either north, east or southeast of Union City, and not southwest, which would put him in the congested commute flowing toward the airport and downtown areas in the morning, and conversely the other way in the afternoon. Lots of "country space" down that way, including Fairburn, Palmetto and the Chattahoochee Hill Country. Lots of options.

If he prefers city living, it'll be more of a commute, but at least he'll be going against the general inbound flow of traffic from the southwest.

Unfortunately Union City is not one of the nicer areas of Atlanta. The good news is with a little commute there are a lot on nice areas near there. It really depends on how much he is willing to pay per month. I f he wants a condo or a house to rent or buy. The apartments in and around Union City, IMHO, I would not stay in. There are nearby town that have nice areas; Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Senoia, Newnan, Palmetto, Tyrone, Fairburn. Probably any direction you go but north would be the best unless you want to go to the Vining/Cumberland area near Marietta. The problem there is you have to fight Atlanta traffic if you go north. Anyway I'm a country boy who doesn't like the city so take that at what it's worth.

I live in Coweta county (as does Lewis), it is about 5 miles for me to I85, total trip to work (near the airport) is about 25 miles, and it takes us less than 30 minutes to get there. I second the feelings about Union City not being the place to live, as a matter of fact, I probably start looking south of Palmetto.

Peachtree City is a nice place, but can be frustrating to find anything because of their sign ordinances and traffic there is really bad. It is a long haul on some fairly jammed roads to get to the Union City area. Fayetteville will have some four lane roads that run across to Union City, but are usually kind of busy. You also need to watch where you live in Fayetteville. Newnan has some nice places to live and a fairly easy commute to the UC area, either by I85 or route 29. Not a lot of nightlife there though. Virginia Highlands/Decatur is a fairly nice place for folks who enjoy the nightlife scene, but the commute would be terrible.

My 2 cents.

I forwarded all the comments posted to Mike and Jeremy.

Got a note from Mike (father) and Jeremy (Son) wanting to me to thank all of you for the information on the Atlanta area. Jeremy flew down to Atlanta this morning and is heading to Peachtree City and Newnan to look for apartments. THANKS AGAIN.
