Marcarl Posted August 17, 2010 #1 Posted August 17, 2010 I needed to grease the splines, so I also took the drive shaft out,,,, not a biggie,,, I done this before, even wrote on how to do it the easy way, without extra tools. Now it WON"T go in,,, it just won't go in,,, I mean it just won't engage. I can wiggle the u-joint, turn the U-joint, see the u-joint, get the shaft started into the u-joint, but it won't engage. Anybody have any ideas???????? 4 hours at this, and I'm a little frustrated.
Monty Posted August 17, 2010 #2 Posted August 17, 2010 yeah, you're too sober. Walk away from it, cool off and drink a few beers. When you come back, it should slide right in.
relic Posted August 17, 2010 #3 Posted August 17, 2010 Buy a new bike (2nd Gen) and see my motto! Just Kidding, hope you get it fixed Carl
99silver Posted August 17, 2010 #4 Posted August 17, 2010 Walk away and say a prayer..... go back and put the darn thing in. It works for me !!!!!!!!
Marcarl Posted August 17, 2010 Author #5 Posted August 17, 2010 Tried all that so far,,, even slept on it,,,,, just in case somebody thought that would be an idea. Thanks so far. Carl
flb_78 Posted August 17, 2010 #6 Posted August 17, 2010 I had the same problem in my RSV. No matter how I stuck my tongue out, the drive shaft would not couple to the u-joint. I finally bumped the engine with the starter the joint and it just fell in.
Marcarl Posted August 17, 2010 Author #7 Posted August 17, 2010 got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a new trick, post it on VentureRiders, threaten to take down the swing arm, look at your wife with,,,,,, never mind, that didn't work,,,,, Actually, what I expected to happen a long long time ago, like last night,, just happened. Now to install the rest of the stuff. Yahoooooooo!!!! Thanks Guys,,, you're the greatest bunch around,,, don't know what you did,,, but you didded it.
relic Posted August 17, 2010 #8 Posted August 17, 2010 Oh Well! No new bike. You really can't take a hint can you! Glad it all worked out.We will catch up with you soon for a ride hopefully.
MiCarl Posted August 18, 2010 #9 Posted August 18, 2010 got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next time use the "good" profanity right away, instead of taking two days to get the job done. It just doesn't pay to be stingy with the four letter words.
Yammer Dan Posted August 18, 2010 #10 Posted August 18, 2010 I was gone all day Carl or I would have taken care of this early today. Did the same thing last time myself. I think I even posted on here that it didn't want to play fair!!! Glad you got it.
Marcarl Posted August 18, 2010 Author #12 Posted August 18, 2010 Did I miss something? What was the trick? Got to hold your tongue right!!!!! no if's and's or but's, it's either right or it's not going to work. Actually, the spline fits into the u-joint 'just so', it needs to be lined up to within 0 degrees tolerance, at least that is a good assumption. Close will not be good enough, so patience is a virtue. One time you'll get it right, right off the bat, and the next time it may take 4 hours! YA!! Just don't go nuts and use a hammer, won't help none at all.
rod Posted August 18, 2010 #13 Posted August 18, 2010 I hit the leading edge with a file to knock off the sharp edge of the splines. Not much just took the sharp corner off the front. Rod
Marcarl Posted August 18, 2010 Author #14 Posted August 18, 2010 I hit the leading edge with a file to knock off the sharp edge of the splines. Not much just took the sharp corner off the front. Rod I had thought about doing that,,,, did it help???
