mshowe Posted August 16, 2010 #1 Posted August 16, 2010 I recently purchased a 1993 VR. On the right hand side, part of the water coolant lines, I noticed a grayish tape around a joint. I took the gray tape off to get a better look at what it was covering. Is this tape normal? If so, I guess I'll need to know what kind of tape to put back on. If it's not normal, any thoughts on what I should to do fix what he was covering up. Thank you. file:///C:/Users/sean/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/OLK3A13/IMAG0130.jpgI have attached a photo for explanation.
dingy Posted August 16, 2010 #2 Posted August 16, 2010 The tape is not standard. There is an O'ring on the pipe that goes into water pump to prevent leaking. Tape was very likely to stop a leak. Does the front of the pipe that the tape was around have a nick on it? If it does, this likely happened when bike went over on right side and front crash guard was pushed into the pipe, possibly causing it to leak. Gary
skydoc_17 Posted August 16, 2010 #3 Posted August 16, 2010 Hey Sean, Under that "special Tape" that should not be there is an O'Ring at each end of the plastic tube that looks like a 90 degree elbow. If the O'Ring at the elbow is leaking, then the gasket and O'ring that is at the other end of the elbow is not far behind. If it was my bike, especially if I just purchased it, I would r&r the elbow and the thermostat housing with new gaskets and O'rings. This is not what I would call a "fun" job, but better to deal with it now in your garage than to have a major coolant leak on the side of the road. Then this repair goes from "not a fun job" to "Possible engine damage", and certainly a major inconvenience. Earl
