bj66 Posted August 12, 2010 #1 Posted August 12, 2010 My first trip to Sturgis was fun. It was also very warm. Mid to upper 90's made downtown Sturgis a blast furnace. I heard that the estimate for Sturgis was 800,000 people because of the 70th anniversary, and I'd believe it. If you rode down main or Lazelle street it would take over an hour to go 5 blocks. On tuesday it was so hot guys were shutting the bikes off and pushing them down the street. I didnt carry a camera with me and trying to take pics riding solo is kinda difficult, but i managed a few pics with my cell phone camera. The last pic is the Missouri river crossing at Gettysburg SD.
Sylvester Posted August 12, 2010 #2 Posted August 12, 2010 If you rode down main or Lazelle street it would take over an hour to go 5 blocks. That is the main reason I don't go there anymore.
bendtdj Posted August 12, 2010 #3 Posted August 12, 2010 Bernie, Glad to hear you made safe & sound. The web cam from the Rapid City Journal is as close as I want to get. Too many people there for me to be comfortable. Did you get to any of the concerts? May see PeeWee? Dave
Hummingbird Posted August 12, 2010 #4 Posted August 12, 2010 I've never been to Sturgis but I have toured the area. I don't particularly care to go just for the congestion problem. Way too big a crowd for me. Thanks for the pics, I hope you enjoyed your visit there enough to make the trek worthwhile
bj66 Posted August 12, 2010 Author #5 Posted August 12, 2010 Nope no concerts for me, we took a backway into Sturgis when we went in. there is 7 or 8 miles of gravel, so that weeds out 99.99999 percent of the bikers that ride. So that part was kind of nice. Since I live in SD and have been on all the roads (iron mnt, needles hwy, etc.) I left that to everybody else. We did ride to the Stone House Bar and Grill just west of Belle Fourche. Wasnt thinking to well on that one. Since it was wednesday and everybody seemed to be heading to Hewlett Wyo, it was terribly busy there as well. We got right in and parked down in the grass at the bottom of the hill. We just ordered a beverage (O' Douls) and a burger. I looked out at the highway and there were bikes lined up for over a mile waiting to get in. But being that it was so hot, I limited my riding time. I was staying with some friends, and they had air conditioning, so we would quit early and cool off. We did alot of cookouts and sat by the camper at night. It cooled off nicely and was to comfortable to do much else!
