autopilot Posted August 8, 2010 #26 Posted August 8, 2010 When I can do so safely, I will usually either initiate or respond to a wave regardless. On the response side, I'd estimate easily 50-75% of GW riders I run across respond in kind or initiate a wave. I my experience, the worst are the guys riding the "custom' chopper style bikes. They look down their nose at everybody. A lot of guys think taking a hand off the bars compromises their safe control of their bike...Frankly I don't care one way or the other. I know that they are riding for the same basic reasons I do, regardless of their personal preferences and their choice in bikes and because of that we are kindred spirits, after a fashion, whether either of us likes it or cares about it or not! IMHO, beyond that it is a total waste of time to devote anything more than a couple of microseconds thinking about it! "TO WAVE OR NOT TO WAVE- THAT IS NOT THE QUESTION!........TO RIDE OR NOT TO RIDE.....THAT IS THE QUESTION!!!!
Sailor Posted August 8, 2010 #27 Posted August 8, 2010 I wave at everyone, even HD riders. I don't expect them to wave back but it is nice when they do. Sometimes I can't wave...going into a tight corner, rough pavement, cage trying to cut me off, etc but in those cases I at least nod to them.
Zfrebird4 Posted August 8, 2010 #28 Posted August 8, 2010 I wave at em all, unless traffic gets in the way. Here in CO I find more than 90% wave back, including a lot of harleys'. Many who do not are hard core Harleys' who need to protect their image, or have to just hang on to the handlebars due to the constant vibration. My wave is the sign of a Master Mason, and a few recognize it. Waving is a courtesy, and I will always do it. When there is an obvious snub, I just drop my hand down, one finger extended (index finger; don't want to cause road rash! LOL). And then I go onto the next wave. Squidley's mind? It remains a marvel to all of it; it is the last frontier for Lonna to tame. Good luck Lonna! JackZ
ediddy Posted August 8, 2010 #29 Posted August 8, 2010 Years ago you didn't see many motorcycles on the road so I waved at everyone. It was kind of special to see a cycle among the many autos. Today there are so many motocycles on the road it has become a PITA to wave at all of them. I wish everyone would stop the waving. When someone waves at me I feel obligated to wave back. When my wife and I are riding in the mountains I tell her she will have to be the one to wave for us. I have my mind on the curves and the road and cars and don't won't to be distracted having to look at the oncoming bikes to wave.
Dave77459 Posted August 8, 2010 #30 Posted August 8, 2010 On my recent ride to upper midwest, I had lots of chances to wave. I'll wave at about everyone, including trikes. I noticed that wavebacks were pretty scant on the freeways. And yes, the least responsive were the Goldwings. The most responsive were sportbikes, although they waved late (they didn't expect it??). On two-lane roads, wavebacks were much more common. It almost felt like interstate roads were for out-of-towners, and two-lane strips were for locals, and you should be friendly to locals? *shrug* I wave to signify my solidarity with others. If they don't want to be solid with me, that's their personality disorder. I also wave because looking for bikes keeps my eyes on the road and my alertness up. If I happen to notice a motorcycle as it is abreast of me, well then shame on me. On the freeways there are precious few distractions, and if I don't see a bike it is because my alertness has waned. Time to take a break. Dave
Cruser Posted August 8, 2010 #33 Posted August 8, 2010 In the spirit of this thread, On todays ride, 140 miles round trip I encountered about 40 other riders, I waved to each as we passed, all but three waved back, those three were on harley's wearing colors I won't mention here. at any rate it was a friendly day, hot in the valley cool in the mountains, the burgers were good, but my brother drove me nuts! He kept trying to catch up with me on his voyager, He should know better by now:smile5:

slick97spirit Posted August 9, 2010 #35 Posted August 9, 2010 DITTO On any given weekend ride, I will see tons of riders and frankly, it's getting to be a PITA waving at all of them... so, I wave at a few, if I think about it and it's convenient. SAME HERE
Ky. Rider Posted August 9, 2010 #36 Posted August 9, 2010 50 years ago in our rural area most people in cars waved at other people in cars. One reason was there were much fewer cars on the road and another reason was it was a slower society. People were more friendly. As the number of motorcycles increases you will naturally meet more that won't wave for one reason or another. Brand names has little to do with it. It's all about attitudes. If I wave, and I do most of the time, and they don't wave back, so be it. It doesn't ruin my ride. I also don 't feel obligated to wave at every motorcycle I meet. Be safe and enjoy the ride, that's what counts.
