GPS Mounting & Connecting on an RSTD

I was wondering if people could post pics of how they mounted their GPS's. I have the RAM-Mount set up that uses a u-bolt on the handlebar. I have not installed it yet and was curious as to what others had done to see if anyone had a better set up than what I am planning on doing.

 

My other question is where to get power. My original plan was to power it from the connector near the battery. But I seem to remember there being another connector under the cover where the key is. I am at work and the bike is home so I can't look. I have to take that cover off to remove the tank etc. But if there is a plug there it would make things easier.

 

One more question is for people with the Zumo 660. On my last bike I ended up clipping all the data wires and just using the power on the cradle. This simplifies the wiring harness. Not sure what the usb is for in any case. Has anyone else done this? I use an iPod for music so don't necessarily need all the bells and whistles the zumo has.

Mine sits on the U-bolt and runs on batteries. It's a GPSMAP60CSX routing GPS. Battery lasts about 12 hours, which is usually enough.

If you us the u-bolt. Put a piece of heat shrink over the u-bolt. If you decide to move it later there won't be mark on your handlebars.

I have had a tomtom on my RSTD and just last week mounted a garmin. But I'm getting ready to head out on my bike for the weekend.

I'll post some pictures with a how I did it next week.

The Zumo 660 cradle has the wiring hardwired into it, unlike the Zumo 550. One cable (several wires under a single sheath) comes from the 660's cradle and eventually splits into four wires: Power & ground, Aux sound out, Mic sound in and a special connector for an optional traffic info receiver. The power wire is actually a cable with two wires that also split later: hot and ground.

 

My advice is to leave the cable as is. It's pretty neatly packaged, so not a problem. Just tuck any unused wires away. Some day you may be glad that you didn't cripple the unit by cutting off what you didn't want today.

Canadian RSTD have only kilometers no mph, wife`s US bought Roady has mph and kilometers on it also...sometimes we are not the most forward thinking nation...guess Yamaha Canada thought we would just ride the crappy roads in Canada and never leave the country

Same set up I have, use the GPS for hunting also... But do have the Ram mount for the wifes Garmin when we want to plug it in for the longer trips....
