Everyone, first I'm new to the forum! I just bought a 96 Royal Star a few months back. I have loved the bike, but have one problem that has come up.

 

The needle in the carbs were sticking and I was losing fuel so I gave them a good seafoam bath (thanks for everyone that posted this tip in previous posts). That stopped the leak, but now the engine seems to be lugging, it is especially noticeable in 4th and 5th gears, is there anything that I should try. I did replace the spark plugs about three days before the carbs decided to gum up.

Ive found that after using a lot of seafoam it frequently fouls the plugs. I guess all that varnish and crap from the carbs had to end up somewhere.

Hey Jason,

Welcome to the site!

If you replaced the plugs BEFORE you added the Seafoam to you gas, you might try another set of plugs. If the Carbs. were that gummed up, you basically washed all of that mess onto the sparkplugs. The next thing I would suggest would be a Carb. Sync.

Here's how this works: go to the members list and find all of the members that live in your area. PM each one and invite them to meet for Ice Cream, Coffee, or Lunch. Have them bring their Carbtune (or other Manometer) and you will get your Carbs. Synced, make a new friend and learn a bit about your bike all at the same time!

Do your ride the thing like a Harley never going above 3000 rpm's? These things rev higher different style of riding then a Harley.

So, I changed the spark plugs and the air filter, it is still lugging.

 

Just as a heads up, I generally shift into 4th gear at about 40 MPH and 5th at about 60 MPH.

 

The best way that I can describe what it does, is when I give it a little bit of gas to go, it doesn't want to create any power, but haphazardly, after a few seconds it will go like it use too, and then lug again like it's not creating any power.

 

Is the next step to see if the carbs are synced, and are there any other suggestions.

Hey welcome. Just to let you know you have just enterd the best site for these bike. Its like having a NASA enginering team at yor fingertips the guys on this site can figuer out most problums givien time and info. Enjoy the site I always do.
