mshowe Posted July 20, 2010 #1 Posted July 20, 2010 I am considering purchasing a 1983 with 33k on it. Could someone tell me, do all 2nd gears go out? If so, is there a typical mileage? Can anything be done to help prevent it? When/if it does go out, can one still ride the bike without 2nd gear without fear of further damaging things? Thank you from a newbie to the forum.
mini-muffin Posted July 21, 2010 #2 Posted July 21, 2010 Yes all the 2nd gears will go out usually around 62000 miles or so. Some can go early some a bit later. You can do the fix or get a tranny out of a Mark II (86 - 93). Then the problem will be solved for good. Margaret

You could do the 2nd gear work preventativly, over the winter downtime. Some just bypass 2nd gear, as they have not gotten around to fixing it.
