BLOOMINGDALE — The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says an 18-year-old Bloomingdale man is dead after his motorcycle struck a large bird Monday afternoon.

Police say 18-year-old Dillon Reed was driving eastbound on County Road 380, east of 39 ½ Street in Bloomingdale.

Police say a large turkey buzzard flew across Reed’s path and hit him in the chest. The impact caused him to lose control of his motorcycle.

Reed went off the road and struck several trees. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reed was not believed to be speeding and was wearing a helmet. Alcohol is not a factor in this crash.

That's a horrible way to go and it just verifies that fact that as a biker, we are subject to so many variables that it would be impossible to forsee and evade all of them.

All my best to his family
