I was doing some maintenance before going on a three day trip with our local Star group so while I was at it I blocked off the AIS with rubber plugs. I was hoping that the popping would be gone. It's the same as it was before.

I guess I need to check for an exhaust leak.

Will synchronizing the carbs help?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have an '06 with drilled out RK mufflers. I've sync'd the carbs and plugged the AIS but still get popping on decel. Haven't checked for exh leaks yet but neither thing changed the popping. I'm now suspecting it's because I drilled out the RK's so there's very little to no back pressure.

That's a real shame. I am sorry for you.

Well I used the search feature and didn't find the answer. I know this subject has been covered. Like I said, I couldn't find much.

Oh and hey, thanks for your sarcasm.

There's a lot of that floating around here LOL ... hope you didn't take offense to it... seems to be some kind of "acquired" trait one gets after being on this site for a while.... (speaking for myself of course...:scratchchin:)

Uechi,

Have you tried what I suggested about using "Seafoam" w/ your fuel? I had the popping and it stopped it. Just a thought. BTW don't let the emoticon freaks bother you! They really mean you no harm!

:bang head:

Okay, enough with the shenanigans, how about we get a little more information so we can maybe trouble shoot this for you.

Could you be a little more descriptive with your 'popping'. For example is it all the time, on decel, on accel, right after you finish a hard accel and basically cut the throttle, when you've got popcorn in the tail-pipes, at idle, how long has this been an issue, etc etc.

Some relatively easy things to check are your vacuum caps, carb synch would be a reasonable thing to do as well (it may or may not help). I suppose I could continue to list, but some more information would certainly be helpful and then you could get some REAL answers :stickpoke:

By the way, I NEVER use sarcasm :no-no-no::no-no-no:. Nope, uh uh. Never.

Actually, I was a little offended. If I wanted to get flamed I could just go over to wakeboarder.com and take some abuse by the 20 somethings.

Like I've said before, I'm starting to do my own maintenance again because there are no dealers close by.

The popping happens when getting off the freeway, going down hill. Pretty much any time I use the engine to slow the bike down. I never get popping at idle.

If looking for an exhaust leak and a carb sync are the first things to do, then that's what I'll do. I will add some Seafoam this next tank seeing as how I have some here.

Don't get offended Rich. It happens every time anyone asks a technical question. You have to wade thru 3 to 4 comedy responses before getting to the meaningful replies... They're just trying to be 'good ol' boy' friendly... I do remember seeing posts about this subject several times over the years, and there didn't seem to have been a definative answer. I think I'd toss a good sync at it to see if that'd help, and as long as it just goes 'pup' instead of 'ka-pow' I'd live with it...

One of the main pitfalls of sarcasm "on-line" is that there is no voice tone or body language to determine the underlying intent. That being said, one really has to take it lightly, with a grain of salt, and assume it is in jest.

Sometimes a bit of "up-front" sarcasm is a way to feel a person out ... find out their "buttons" so to speak. I'm sure I've taken it the wrong way a time or two but then I look at myself and my own "state of mind" or mood and realize that the way I took the sarcasm was just "my $hit" and I need to deal with it.

Few if any folks here intentionally try to be hurtful.

Hopefully we can help you find a cure for the popping but in my situation, I'm just living with it coz it's not a bother and I know the bike runs great.

Okay, that is some good information.

Quite frankly, if it is just a little rumble on decel (as you have described) - especially down hills and stuff, it may be nothing to worry about.

I know mine rumbles on steep down grades but never, what I would consider a 'true' backfire.

And yes, Exhaust leak, carb sync, and a small dose of sea foam are all things to give a go. Something as simple as switching the brand of fuel you use for a few tanks, may be a good place to start (primarily if you tend to go with one brand regularly).

Hey, where else can you get sarcasm for free!! Most other sites would charge you a hefty price for it. :Bunny:

Goose doesn't mean anything by it. I guess you haven't been around long enough to "get" him.

He's a staunch supporter of the AIS NOT being removed or blocked. If the bike is running correctly, with no problems, there should be no after fires (back fires). As much as anything you CAN use the AIS as a diagnostic tool, to know when something is "off" with the bike. Better to fix the problem and have the bike run at it's peak than mask the problem by disabling the AIS. And it does help keep the pollution down!

As has been mentioned check your vacuum caps for crack or breaks in the seam (why do they make these things in 2 pieces anyway :confused24:). Check the 2 other hoses, at the carb boots, for cracks etc. These are the hoses that actually actuate the AIS reed valves.

Check for cracks in the welds at the Y joint in the exhaust.

Yes, syncing the carbs may help.

Hope you get this all worked out.

Let me say that I'm normally thick skinned. Something just struck me wrong. Sorry.

So now I'm going to buy a carb sync tool and get busy.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I have an 08 with KhromeWerk slip-ons. Initially, had back firing, then re-synced no back firing. On my 05, the backfiring was due to the welds on both Y joints in the exhaust leaking, had the Y joints replaced under warranty.

I do not have the AIS plugged and will not do it, I happen to agree with Goose on this.

Do a search on V7Goose and you will where he has very good information that may be causing the backfire.

I had the same problem develop. My AIS is plugged and have Sampson slip on's on my exhaust. Hopefully syncing will help. But I found that the only thing that got rid of mine was cleaning the carbs. The gas we are getting down here has the 10% crap (forgot what they call it sorry but crap is a good name for it) in it which causes the problem. I use two products and will try to get the names posted on here by tomorrow. I tried Seafoam and it had no effect at all. The two products I'm using now have kept the problem at bay. Let you know about them tomorrow and maybe they might help you.

The only reason I did the AIS block off was because I read it would stop the popping, not back fire. Before I sync the carbs I will pull out the plugs and put the AIS back to stock. I'm trying to learn as much as I can in as little time as possible. I'm never going to have 30 years of experience as a mechanic. That's why this place is so important to someone like me.

Well, I did the same as you. I plugged the AIS, like you, and, like you, found it didn't solve the problem. So I unplugged and went from there.

My problem, I believe, was that the pipes I bought the bike with offered no back pressure what-so-ever. I put the stock pipes back on and problem solved.

Not saying that this is your problem. This sounds more like a vacuum or exhaust leak or synching than my problem. And with as new a bike as yours I'd suggest the synch over the others, then vacuum leak at the rubber caps and hoses on the intake boots.

Can someone explain that when you search for AIS, that this thread ( or any others with AIS in the title) don't appear (Sorry No results match) and if you do the Search this thread (the one we're in) function for AIS as Keyword, it does the same thing and doesn't find the half dozen or so time the term AIS is used. I am using advance and have tried searching just titles and entire threads.

Doing some thing wrong maybe?

AIS is not a long enough search parameter for the site's search function unfortunately. It has to be 4 letters or more.:confused24:

Minimum length for a search string is 4 characters, that is to prevent overload on the server by churning through too many pointless possibilities on miscellaneous character combinations. It is too bad since so many key terms are three letter acronyms now, but that is the limitation.

One of the tricks to successful searches is to think about other longer words that might have been used in posts about the same subject.
