Panama City Route

I will be traveling to Panama City Beach early in August. I am driving my Trans Am which gets very good gas mileage on the highway but drops pretty bad when faced with a lot of stoplights. I have routed from Hattiesburg,Ms to Mobile,Al on hwy 98. When I hit I65 should I go ahead and take it south to I 10? Looks much shorter to follow 98 but it also looks like it goes into a downtown.
