Snowman269 Posted July 13, 2010 #1 Posted July 13, 2010 Help, I'm at my wits end, 1986 VR. Dealer siliconed all the coils and wires, connections, they just replaced second gear and i hoped they would solve the miss while the motor was out, but I just washed the bugs off the windshield and the next morning it is only running on 2 cylinders. I hardly used any water, this is ridiculous. If I get caught in the rain or wash the bike, it will run fine, until the next day, then it's down for 3 days, until it dries out. Anyone ever have this happen, help. How do I fix this, where do I start?
painterman67 Posted July 13, 2010 #2 Posted July 13, 2010 check the cdi connections and see if they are getting wet???????????? thats where mine went bad. David
Flyinfool Posted July 13, 2010 #3 Posted July 13, 2010 I use the other method. I wash the bike just once a year whether it needs it or not......... Is it always the same 2 cylinders that are not running? Will warming it up dry it out and make it run better?
Snowman269 Posted July 13, 2010 Author #4 Posted July 13, 2010 Ok, I'll check the CDI connections, Thanks. Basically, I can't wash it. I don't know which cylinders, and no, warming it up doesn't help. It's been like this for 5+ years, it's just so annoying. I'd really like to go on a trip, but I don't dare, that's why I really want to solve this.
painterman67 Posted July 13, 2010 #5 Posted July 13, 2010 do the warm up test.............crank it and let it run for 30 or so seconds and gingerly put your hand on each exhaust header. The ones not running will be cold. David
skydoc_17 Posted July 13, 2010 #6 Posted July 13, 2010 It 's going to be a bugger to get to but I would move the TCI up on top of the Air Box. A lot of First Gens. Suffer from this problem. While you have it out of the bike, open it up, and dry it out in your oven at 100 Degrees for an hour or two. Do a search and you will find a thread on drying ou the TCI. I had this problem for over a year until I dried my TCI out and relocated it on my 86'VR. Earl
mbrood Posted July 17, 2010 #7 Posted July 17, 2010 Water and the TCI... the whole story is condensation (as Skydoc said). Yamaha put two convienient vent holes in the bottom of the TCI to let heat out but after a rain run and the bike is cooling, the TCI is ALSO cooling and pulling in a tiny amount of moist air... moist because it is right above a hot and wet engine... I actually put a thin piece of wet suit material over the holes on the inside... air can still pass but water can't... but it's still best to be moved up on top of the air filter. http://www.bergall.org/temp/venture/tci/tci%20unit.jpg
saddlebum Posted July 17, 2010 #8 Posted July 17, 2010 Spark plug wires can also be an issue. try firing it up at night or in a dark location and with a spray bottle, spray the plug wires. look for electrical arcing or as we sometimes call it christmas lights. If no arcing is visible, wires are ok, if visible arcing is seen anywere along plug wires or boots replace them.
Yammer Dan Posted July 17, 2010 #9 Posted July 17, 2010 Why do you wash it?? It's going to rain sooner or later!!
ddoggma Posted July 18, 2010 #10 Posted July 18, 2010 I think my bike has that problem too. Same thing happens to me. If she gets wet it runs like crap for a week or so. Last year it was in a garage most of the time so I didn't see it until I moved. Now she gets rained on thru the cover a little and starts trouble.... I have Dunlop E3 on the way, then I want to address the moisture problem.
mrich12000 Posted July 18, 2010 #11 Posted July 18, 2010 :soapbox:Just finished the Run to the Koots with Rocket on the way home and during the rally it rained. Well the bike became a little fickle, It dona like the rain or the Evil TomTom (But thats another story) Paul and I departed company after staying at Radium Springs. He had to get back quick. I still had a week of vacation from Calgary Transit. I made it back home via Highway 93 to Banff, then to Calgary, So having a week remaining I did the Kanaanaskis( Home of the 1986 winter Olympics) run From Highway 1 just outside of Camore Alberta Start at the Stoney Casino then south on highway 40.. Great mountains views but I don't want to thread hijack... Well heading into Longview the heavens opened up and the Mule (my bike's name)started to act up loosing the No. 3 cyl. intermittently. I knew what was up so on my way back to Calgary I stopped at Black Diamond Alberta (highly recommend this town for the fine fair) Stopped at the Black diamond Hotel, the steak here is SO good.. waited for the mule to dry out as the rain had subsided. Had the steak Yum.. Started her and we went the 30 kilometers to home. I left her sleep for two days, well you think she would start? NO, took some bit of Voodoo, finally she started and i could hear the snapping of the Coils. Sorry for the long wind, Today she ran super as she wasn't wet and she was dried out. I found new coils from a supplier I have, they are on the way. e for the trip to Edmonton lol..So to you sir, Change the coils install new Accel Black max solid core wires, new resistor boots and you cured. Next thing to fix is the 2nd gear and the diaphragms.. And yes Paul I left the evil one at home..
84xj1100 Posted July 19, 2010 #12 Posted July 19, 2010 I actually had the same problem and discovered two things, First my plug wires were bad/old - I sprayed them (sealed them) that helped but didn't cure the problem. I would have to ride for 20 - 30 kms after washing or in the rain (?10 - 15 miles?) and then the bike would perform the way it should. Between the time I initially sprayed the wires and got around to replacing them, I found one of the wire connections to the plug cap wasn't good. The braided spark plug wire had retracted slightly inside the cover and wasn't making good contact. I cut 1/4'' off the plug wire and reinstalled the cap which helped as well. I eventually got round to replacing the plug wires = problem solved.

Lemon Fresh Pledge and micro-towel are the only things that ever touch any of the bikes.

Lemon pledge? I hate to be ignorant about this. Could you elaborate. Thanks I want to know where it is used on .Thanks Michael.

Black Owl Posted July 19, 2010 #16 Posted July 19, 2010 Have you checked for a crack in the distributor cap?
starkruzen Posted July 19, 2010 #17 Posted July 19, 2010 I have not had any problem like you are describing on my 07 RSTD. I even pressure wash the bike sometimes and have no problems. Is this something indicative on Ventures?
