hibars Posted July 11, 2010 #1 Posted July 11, 2010 Was curious if its possible to replace the trans gears without pulling the motor? I know you have to split the case but I do see the one side frame rail comes apart. I have limited room in my garage, so even if it takes longer thats fine, i have all winter.
rjg1985 Posted July 11, 2010 #2 Posted July 11, 2010 Even if it is possible to fix second gear in the bike, I think would much easier to pull the engine out and do it.
mrich12000 Posted July 11, 2010 #3 Posted July 11, 2010 (edited) It's not a bicycle that you can turn upsidown, or is it? Sorry, I had to go back and edit this comment. I have the same problem, my second is failing as well and I am driving her with the second gear skip. Having limited area to remove the engine, when the engine is pulled, move the bike off to a safe area if you have it, I suggest you purchase an auto engine stand, obtain 3/4 ft threaded stock and 4 nuts make this for the engine through hole brackets.Tighten the threaded stock, arrange the rods to fit the upper case, this will enable you to take the case bolts out and gain access to the transmission. On Ebay or Google, the is a video with this operation for a V-max, it shows all the procidures..hope this helped fix you bike.. DragonRider Posted July 11, 2010 #4 Posted July 11, 2010 I helped Muffinman with a transmission fix on Clay18's bike when we did the makeover on it........Only one way and you have to pull the engine and flip it over. I will be doing the same to mine very soon, don't want to do it, but it is the only thing that needs to be done and I would love to have second gear back, my bike made it to 82,000 mile before it started jumping out on a regular basis so I guess I was one of the luckier ones, some go a lot sooner but most start doing it around 60,000 or so.
Shorty Posted July 11, 2010 #5 Posted July 11, 2010 I was wondering if it's possible to put a transmission from a Second Gen to be able to get the Overdrive.

I know you have to split the case but I do see the one side frame rail comes apart. I have limited room in my garage, so even if it takes longer thats fine, i have all winter. Sorry, no. There's no room to separate the case with the engine still in the frame. I was wondering if it's possible to put a transmission from a Second Gen to be able to get the Overdrive. Yes, it will drop in and fit and work, but you will kill your acceleration and performance. If you still want to do it anyway, make sure you also swap the matching shift drum and forks. Myself, I went the other way. I ditched my stock transmission and installed one out of an '87 Venture. Much more appropriate gear ratios and much better performance. Overdrive isn't what it's cracked up to be.
hibars Posted July 12, 2010 Author #8 Posted July 12, 2010 Well, Crap, But thanks guys. Guess I need to clean the garage. I have owned 4 ventures in the last 4 or 5 years and this is by far the nicest looking one, but its the first one to have the trans prob. Wish i would have kept one of my old ventures for parts. Guess I will skip 2nd for now.
superscouser Posted July 13, 2010 #9 Posted July 13, 2010 Just got my box of bits to fix the Second Gear issue ... now to see if I can remember how this engine goes back together.
