not sure if what you found fixed the problem, but as someone mentioned the air intake system I was wandering about the air outlety system. I had a Dodge van that idled,ran and reveed fine with no load. With load couldnt do over 45. Turned out to be the cataletic(spelling) converter. Now I dont think a venture has one of those but maybey just maybey a stopped up exhaust.

The Infected part (s) :detective:were BOTH Air Filter Housing Openings.

 

Now the reason why is-- about 8 months ago I purchased

BuddyRich's Wind Blockers and a lot of us were having problems

with them coming loose. so the fix was to place a block of foam

under the deflector and wedge it into/on-top of the air filter. (worked really well)

 

I have been riding with them for most of the cold season and went

to remove them last month and noticed that the blocks were gone

as they kept creeping there way down to the air opening all this time

the one's I used were black so I did not see this coming, and had just changed out the filters for new ones just before the wind blocker install.

 

I figured they just fell out.. THEY fell out alright.. right into each air

filter opening perfectly. this had to happen over time. the one picture that

I show is the same for the other filter housing as well.

 

I also just came back from a wonderful 30 mile ride and all is great even re-checked the plugs and there all clean with no more black soot on them.

 

As far has Buddy's Wind Blockers , I will continue to use them as it has been

a wonderful mod, BUT I will now glue the foam with household goop to the blocker for future use. (I just did not think of this happening /:whistling: stupid me)

So any of you using them might want to consider gluing them in place.

 

One other positive thing out of this finding was that I did find a bad Diaphragm

that could have could a pretty bad problem in the future , kind of strange all this

time how well the bike ran with one bad diaphragm in the carbs

Awwww.Just finished a 70 mile ride.. WONDERFUL! :big-grin-emoticon:

It still amazes me that these bikes will still get you were

your going even with two air intakes 90% Clogged and

2 holes in one Diaphragm. :happy65:

It's ironic, after all the issues you had with yours I took the covers off the diaphragms on the '89 and lo and behold all 4 of them have holes in 'em. Looks like I am going to have to search out the post on just buying the rubbers to replace them, I dont want to spend $250 on all new parts as the sliders are still good. I knew the bike wasn't perfect, but figured the 100K on the odometer had a bit to do with the slower performance. It will be interesting to see how the mileage and performance pick up after I get it all swapped out. It doesn't run that bad as it is whodathunktit

100K on an 89, and never replaced the diaphrams ( were tamper proof screws still there?? )

We all knew you needed new diaphrams !!! All 1st Gens need NEW Diaphrams !!

Yep, there was 1 tamper proof screw in each carb, but I have the bit for them

:) When I 1st got the bike I did the quick test with reaching into the throat and sliding the assembly back to see how fast it reacted coming fwd. It seemed fine when I did it, but since then I have put 10K on the bike, so it's time.
