Oldseadog Posted July 10, 2010 #1 Posted July 10, 2010 I am looking for anyone with a metal chin cowling, willing to take a few detailed pictures of it for me. I am doing some metal fabrication at work, and I thought it would be great to fabricate one for my bike, which is a '84. I thought I could fit a MKII cowling, but was told I have to change the engine guards. I have access to some Stainless Steel sheet metal and thought it shouldn't be too hard to fab one up. If you could you send me a PM with the pictures and some rough measurements that would be great. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!!
barend Posted July 10, 2010 #2 Posted July 10, 2010 The cut outs for the lights are 2-5/8th by 2 the front top is 14-3/8th the front bottom is 13-1/2 the back bottom is a hair over 14 just in front of the pipes. Teh "ears" are bend in slightly to crimp the thing on the mounts front to back on the botom edge is 8 1/2 front to back on top is 3 there is a cutout for the top engine guard mount and on mine the bottom edge has a slight scallop on it front to back. measurements are O.D. If you want the original pictures send me your e-mail addy. Hope this helps
Oldseadog Posted July 10, 2010 Author #3 Posted July 10, 2010 I really appreciate the pictures and the measurements.
StuD Posted July 10, 2010 #5 Posted July 10, 2010 I is hard to find lights to fit the chin, you may want to pick up lights first. If you are able to make more then one I'm sure there would be some members interested. I for one. :canada:
barend Posted July 11, 2010 #6 Posted July 11, 2010 bendtdj put some surface mount lights in the holes on the old scoop, I imagine if you're going to fab one you should be able to incorporate some type of mounting bracket for whatever lights you want to put on.
Midicat Posted July 11, 2010 #7 Posted July 11, 2010 ... If you are able to make more then one I'm sure there would be some members interested. I for one. :canada: Yeah. What he said! Absolutely! Thomas
Oldseadog Posted July 13, 2010 Author #8 Posted July 13, 2010 I was out for the weekend. Went and watch my Riders play the Lions, good game! I am not planing on using the square lights. I have a set of small bullet driving lights I bought earlier, and was going to build them in to the cowling. I'm also thinking if I can't use stainless I could use aluminum. Aluminum would definately be easier to form. I do find it trickier to weld though. I'm going to start working on the patterns this week.
