gibvel Posted July 7, 2010 #26 Posted July 7, 2010 Ok - here's we go again. I was told that once I used Synthetic, I couldn't go back to regular oil. Should they have said SHOULDN'T ? instead of couldn't ? Doesn't matter, neither is correct. Many have gone back and forth with no problems.

Two Tone White Posted July 7, 2010 #28 Posted July 7, 2010 I've been changing oil twice a year with about 1000 miles between. Last year I changed the oil and put in amsoil with the MotorKote additive. The whine became unbearable at 55-60 mph so I dumped it out and put mobile 1 back in. Now the whine is guaranteed to show up at 55mph and yesterday a chirp showed up. Tomorrow I'm going to change oil again and this time I'm going to put Mobile 1 20w50 in it. It's really getting aggravating when people on the street stare at you and I know I'm not THAT unattractive, nor is my Venture. If anybody has any theories on this I sure would be willing to try them. I haven't bought the oil yet but I will tomorrow. Thanks in advance Make sure you know what you are putting in the bike. I have used this in the Venture since I bought the bike with no issues at all: http://www.mobil.com/usa-english/motoroil/oils/mobil1_racing_4t_10w-40.aspx Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 New Formulation - Engineered for on-road, off-road and competition four-cycle motorcycles. Key benefits of Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40: Helps provide optimum acceleration and peak horsepower Scientifically developed high-performance additive system Provides excellent engine protection at peak rpm Superb transmission protection I use this stuff for my Harley's, not the Venture: http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_V-Twin_20W-50.aspx Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 Formulated specifically for four-cycle V-twin engines. Key benefits of Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50: Outstanding resistance to thermal breakdown. Optimized for hot-running, air-cooled engines. Enhanced lubrication for peak horsepower. Protects engines against harmful dirt deposits. Excellent transmission performance.
Hummingbird Posted July 7, 2010 Author #29 Posted July 7, 2010 I have used the Mobile 1 V Twin 2 times in my Venture - wasn't happy with either run. I just put in Suzuki Motorcycle racing oil that my Yammy shop recommended, still have a whine but I 'think' it's a little quieter. If it (whine) get's annoying, I'll try the Mobile 1 Racing 4T - not sure I've seen it anywhere tho -

Condor Posted July 7, 2010 #31 Posted July 7, 2010 With all the comments about different oil formulas to get rid of the whine, has anyone ever tried adding a little STP?? Haven't seen or heard of it for a long while now. Does it still exist, or am I showing my age??? I guess it still does, but it don't look like it used to.... STP OIL TREATMENT
Trader Posted July 7, 2010 #32 Posted July 7, 2010 My 83 VR has a little over 50,000 miles (84,000km) It has a definite chirp that sounds like it's coming from the rear end...and of more concern...the only time I hear the whine everyone is talking about is on corners. Could it be a rear bearing on its way out?

Could it be a rear bearing on its way out? If the whine is every time you lean into a corner then I'd be more apt to say it's tire whine. Some brands of tires whine a lot when leaning into turns.

No - this darn thing wines sitting still - then it gets worse as the speed increases - 55 mph is the worst area and cruising at 65 70 coming back from RT was a real pain in the ear.
