Synthetic Oil and The Dealer

I hate to do this, but here we go on another synthetic oil jag:

So I took my new '09 RSTD to the dealer for the first service (they are also putting on the Flanders bars and lines but that is for another thread)

 

So I asked the service guy if they could put synthetic oil in when they change the oil. He said they don't like to do that and went on a discussion on how it causes the clutch to slip and on "R6 motorcycles causes a ticking noise that sounds like the engine is coming apart". He told me if I insist they will do that but they don't like to because of all of the complaints. Plus he intimated that if I put synthetic in they would have to tear down the engine to find the problems it will cause and it will only be fixed by putting regular oil in.

 

Any way I swear by synthetic, I have always used Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. I am planning on using Amsoil. I will probably go a few hundred miles on this oil then change it to the amsoil.

I took some Mobil 1 to my dealer one time when I had them servicing the bike and they put it in with no questions or comments.

My Yamaha dealer sells Mobil 1 4T synthetic as well as Yamalube.

 

I wouldn't trust the above mechanic to touch my machine.

Just a thought...since your dealer says synthetic is no good, I would ask them, why does Yamaha sell 100% synthetic with their name on it?

Personally, I would use dino oil for the first 2 oil changes so the engine would break/wear in, then switch to a synthetic proper grade oil made specifically or suitable for motorcycles with wet clutches. If you don't feel comfortable after with the synthetic, then switch back.

 

I'm sure there are other ideas and opinions...but that's my 2 cents.

If they put pure dino Yamalube in your bike, it is perfectly satisfactory. There are other brands and blends you don't want. I used Castrol Synthetic for a while since it met the SM grade, but I have switched to Castrol Synblend and my 02 RSMV love it. I run it every 5,000 miles.

used repsol 4t until I got tired of paying for it switched to mobil 1 20 50 and it seems to have cut the whine a bit every dealer and servive tech I know swears by syn

I have a 2000 venture and it whines terrible. It has synthetic oil. Can't tell you what kind. Is the oil what causes the whine?

The whine is caused the way the gears mesh together. Other posts have touched on the fact that Yamaha uses straight cut gears as opposed to helical gears. It is just the nature of the beast, for whatever the reason yamaha chose this design with is inherently louder than other configurations.

 

I wear earplugs and can;t really hear the whine.

I use it in all my vehicals.

 

I now use 20 W 50W, Mobile 1, in my 89 Venture, also my 99 Busa, for the last 5 years, no problems.

 

Any Synthetic Oil, is a much better lubricant then petroleum oil.

 

I change oil in spring, and fall, no matter what the milage, in all the vehicals.

 

However if you only run 2 or 3 thousand miles a year, useing the regular oil and changing it once or twice, might be a better option due to cost.

Skip the dealer and change to Synthetic doing your own oil changes.

I use the Rotella Syn.

And I agree about Yamaha has a synthetic, so why is it no good?

david i agree about waiting till a least the 2'nd oil change to let the rings ware in before sswitching to syn. oil.

I also run synthetic and believe in it. However, I've done enough reading about this subject (many opinions out there!) to agree that you should use dino for a couple thousand miles to make sure the engine and rings have been broken in completely. There is no reason to rush into using sync. Regular oil changes; dino or sync and your motor will be fine.

Actually for the first five years Yamaha would have to pay for it..... read your warranty.

So if regular oil fixes the issue, then why does the engine have to be torn apart? Why not just do an oil change.

Plenty of engines come from the factory having seen nothing but synthetic. No "break in" oil needed. In older days, course cyl walls and cast iron rings needed more break in than todays finely honed cylinders and exotic metal rings. Engines will break in just fine with synthetic oil.

 

Just make sure to use a synthetic intended for motorcycles with wet clutches. ANY oil that isn't to that specification, synthetic or regular could cause problems with the clutch.

 

That mechanic has had some bad info from "old mechanics tales" and I bet he thinks it causes leaks (NOT) and more. As stated Yamaha sells synthetic oil, and most manufacturers these days are in favor of using it from the get go.

Been using it on my 2004 RSV since the first thousand miles. Now has about 38,000. No Problems!

I think any premium oil of the proper grade and rating is fine.

I was using mobil one 4t (which is a excellent oil), but after looking at the test data I did not see where I was getting any better than delo 400 15/40.

 

But if you like mobil one run it, its going to give you good service, it is the number 1 rated oil.
